We have 4 Guniea Pigs and we had them for 4 years. They are living inside.

One of our Guinea Pigs, Blacky, is rather unwell - and it is the first time we had one of them really unwell.
She makes a raspy sound when breathing (most of the time, but not all the time).
Very lethargic, she has no interest in food.

I started to syringe feed her last night and gave her poop soup - as she had not pooped at all since yesterday later afternoon till late evening.
That seem to work - as she pooped overnight and this morning - rather liquidy, but better than nothing.

Took her to the vets this morning - they could not find what is wrong with her - and her breath sounded normal at the time.
She got given Baytril as antibiotics (one dosis given, next one due this evening) and Metacam as painkiller.

Syringe feeding initially going well, but the last feed she seem not to swallow some of the food - although it was administered very slowly.
So I stopped after about 6ml
did also gave her some water and poop soup.

of course recovery will not be magic - I get that.

Wondering if there is anything else I should be doing?
or am I making things worse with what I am doing?

thoughts welcome

I'm sorry to hear this.

The only other thing you need to do is make sure to weigh her daily so you can monitor food intake and know you are syringe feeding enough to keep her weight stable each day.
Feed as much as she will take at each sitting and take it at her pace, aiming for 40-60ml per day.

Poop output is 1-2 days behind food intake so until enough food goes back on, poop output won’t be consistent. This is why poop output is an unreliable method of gauging food intake and why daily weight checks are essential.

Refusing to swallow anything at all is when it becomes concerning.

I hope she is ok
