I need some advice on my Guinea pig.
For a few weeks Artimus wouldn't eat most of his veg & herbs which I thought he was fussy as he can be so I didn't think anything of it until this week I thought it was odd that he left all the food completely, didn't bother coming to the door anymore so I took him to the vets on Wed, the vet looked at his teeth & said the front teeth looked long which I disagreed with him because his front teeth was actually short & perfect but he took him out at the back anyway wanting to file his front teeth down but the vet came back and told me that his teeth wasn't as bad as he thought so he didn't do it, he said he couldn't see anything wrong with a tool he used to look in his mouth. He gave me critical care, nothing else.
The next day, I phoned them asking for a scan to see if there is anything wrong so I don't miss anything as I've had bad experiences with my first two Guinea pigs that both vets failed them as they died in the end because they were clueless. I was advised by the vet nurse to come in again for a second opinion with a different vet, I was told by the nurse & vet that they would not sedate a guinea pig for a scan until he puts the weight back on and eating normally again.
The vet gave me metacam & Emeprid for the next few days to see if he'll improve. They are refusing to do any scan until he eats properly, is this the right action? I thought if he does have dental issues that they should act asap before it gets complicated and over grown?.
He is looking bright, he doesn't look ill, no runny nose or crusty eyes. He is taking critical care better now but he still leaves so much veg & herbs in his cage. I try to feed him by hand bit by bit but after he eats a little bit he turns his back on me. I'm trying my best to keep his digestive system going and put his weight back on like they suggested.
He does the fish mouth motion when he eats, what does that mean?.
The first vet wasn't concerned that he lost weight even though I thought more than 50g is not good?. He was always around 1465g but he's now 1229g.
The vets I took him to is supposed to be good with exotics but I don't think they are actually proper exotics especially for Guinea pigs though but they deal with zoo exotic animals etc and are the only nearest vets that I can go.
Can anyone tell me if the vets are right by not giving him a scan or x-ray because he hasn't been eating properly? Surely if it was dental they should file his teeth down asap?

Are you in South Wales? Reason I ask is there is some vets recommended on here in that area. Sounds like you need to see a different vet?

He's not thin, so I'm surprised that reason is being used to not scan. But that is a big weight loss. Are they not confident in sedating pigs perhaps?

Have you tried putting mushed up wet pellets in a bowl for him? If it is dental then he may enjoy that.

Hi, no I'm based in West Wales so it's very difficult to find a exotic vet without travelling a long way and I don't want to stress him out being in carrier for too long, I already have to travel 25 minutes to this vet from where I live.
Yeah that is what I thought so it's very strange. Maybe they want him to be eating normally again before they sedate him?
I mushed up pellets for him straight away few days ago when I didn't have critical care but he wouldn't eat it, seems to prefer the critical care. He does like his pellets but not mushed up.
He's still not eating all of his veg & herbs again this morning in cage, he only ate abit.
If I give him cucumber, he has carried that a few times across the cage or into his bed but doesn't eat it so it must be dental or maybe it's the jaw?
Thankyou for replying

I’m sorry to hear he is unwell.

He probably won’t eat properly until the issue is addressed so waiting won’t necessarily be helpful at all.
He has lost a lot of weight but he is still a good size.

Make sure you are weighing him each morning so you can be sure you are getting enough syringe feed into him.
It’s not eating hay which is the biggest issue.

I can appreciate it’s a long way to travel but it sounds like it might be in his best interests if you can’t get this vet to look into what is wrong with him.
Piggies travel well. We have people on the forum who travel for hours from all over the country to get to a particular vet in Northampton (who are the best dental vets in the country)

It's hard to know what to do. I will weigh him soon and see if his weight has gone up, I'll have to get more critical care.
Unfortunately I can't get there as I don't have the confidence to drive on the motorway, I don't know anyone who drives and the trains would be awful.
I'll see if I can find a exotic vet nearer, I can see there's one in Pembrokeshire on this page? Are they any good?.
I might go back to my vets again and ask for one vet who I think is good as I couldn't get an appointment with him at all as he wasn't available last week so I might try get appointment with him if I can keep Artimus eating

Weigh him each morning as that is when it is most accurate

I hope you can find a vet to help
