Hey everyone!
One of my boys Mayhem is currently unwell. He is 3.5 years old and never been unwell. Around 6 weeks ago or so he seemed to get a bit of a cold. A slight runny wet nose. I took him to the vet and they gave him metacom. Mayhem had it for a couple of days and it cleared up. Not long after that his poos started to change. They just got smaller. But still eating and drinking as usual. Seems bright and happy. As he seemed fine i didn’t take him to the vet. They got bigger again then smaller again and all this time he seemed fine. ( once he did kind of a string of poos that seemed to have some kind of mucus on them but only a tiny bit) he would also chat a lot when pooping. It was only when pooping and definitely not when urinating.
Fast forward to mid last week and I came down in the morning to see he hasn’t eaten any of his food. I thought It was because it was the end of the veggies and maybe it wasn’t as fresh as he was used to. My others boys all ate theirs though. They’re so spoilt and sometimes they will hold back if they think I’ll give them better! 😄
So I removed the veg and put fresh stuff down. He went to eat them but kind of gave up. He would only touch certain stuff too like spinach and parsley. That night he didn’t eat his tea again. So the next morning I took him to an emergency vet appointment. She examined him, looked at his bottom, eyes, had a feel of his body and checked his breathing and all came back clear. So she said it was probably dental issues but she couldn’t see in his mouth as there was food in there and she couldn’t clear it. She gave him an injection for pain and gave me some emergency food pouches and metacom. She then told me to Monitor him over the weekend and book him in on Monday for her to inject him and put him to sleep and shave his teeth down if they need it.
Since returning home mayhem seemed to just look worse. He was actually fine before going, afterwards he was lethargic and was sat hunched with a Spiked coat! The vet had said not to give him metacom until the next day as he had had an injection but I could clearly see he was in pain so I stepped in and gave him 4/5 dose. And stroked him and held him. I didn’t want to wait to ‘ see if he improves’ so the next morning I booked him in at a vet an hours drive away where that specific vet loves Guinean pigs and has more experience. I was there by 10:30am and this vet was great, he could see in mayhems mouth unlike the other vet and confirmed that his teeth needed trimming. He said he would do it now and use gas as it was less risk than injection. He would also X-ray him and check for stones etc.
All came back fine, no stones, he can’t see anything wrong with him apart from his teeth.
He gave me a food syringe and and more painkillers.
mayhem Has now been home since yesterday afternoon so around 24 hours now. He seems spritely and not tired particularly. He wants to eat food but can’t seem to. I’ve read after dental treatment it can be hard for them. I’ve had to give him the syringe food which he hates.
What id like help with, is that he seems to be doing little internal involuntary jerks. Like he will be laying on me and then he will kind of like it’s a jab of pain or something. He can’t seem to get comfy too he keeps shifting his back legs and when I put my hand on his bottom it seems to be quivering but the rest of his body isn’t.
Something tells me something else is up but the X-ray didn’t show anything. His poos are soft and very small. They sometimes come with the mucus and sometimes not. I just want him to poo normally and to be able to eat again.
Has anyone experienced this? He has stopped talking now when he poos but to be honest his poos are tiny. He isn’t impacted. Everything has come back clear...

Thanks so much!
Jen and Mayhem

guinea pigs don’t get colds, they can get bacterial respiratory infections. Metacam is a pain killer and wouldn’t do anything for such an infection. Antibiotics is the treatment for a URI.

guinea pig dentals don’t feature very highly in a vets training and a dental done incorrectly can make the problem worse. It can take a little while for them to gain confidence in eating enough which is why you must syringe feed, but also if things don’t improve after a reasonable period then it can be because there is still something wrong with the mouth.

These kinds of poops can suggest a tummy upset and lack of food intake. Please stop giving him veg and instead only offer him hay and his syringe feeds. How often are you syringe feed him and how much he is taking in a 24 hour period? A piggy who isn’t eating any hay for themselves will need to be syringe fed every couple of hours day and night aiming for 60-90ml of syringe feed in a 24 hour period. You will need to weigh him daily so you can monitor what is happening with his food intake - if his weight drops, then he hasn’t been fed enough.

If he is on pain meds, but still appears to be in pain then he needs to be checked further. Is it dog or cat metacam he is on? What dosage?
i note you specifically mention feeding him spinach and parsley. Those two food items are high in calcium And should only be fed no more than one small piece once per week. Too much calcium can cause stones.

could you please also update your profile to show your location (country/county/state) as it helps us tailor our advice

Hi,
Thank you for your reply. Yes I’m aware calcium is bad if too much is consumed. I knew that if I tried him with parsley and spinach that it would tell me if he had gone off food or if he just couldn’t manage it. Because he loves it so much!
When I saw the vet would he have be able to tell if mayhem had a bacterial infection? He did all the checks on him and everything came back clear, his nose isn’t runny at all now and hasn’t been for at least 3 weeks or so..

Thanks!
P.s i don’t know how to add in location!

If a piggy had a respiratory infection, a knowledgeable vet would know what it is - it can be heard in the chest, and their breathing can become noisy. But if his poops got smaller (reduced food intake) and there was a pain indication (you said he was making noises when pooping) even if if wasn’t a URI, then it suggests there has been something amiss since that time.

Have you been weighing him weekly as part of routine health checks? If so, what has his weight been doing?
hay is the largest part of the diet but intakd cannot be judged by eye. Therefore, a piggy can appear to be eating veg and pellets normally but as they only Make up 20% of the daily intake, it doesn’t really count for much. if their hay intake drops at all then they lose a great part of daily food intake and their weekly weight checks are often the only way of spotting early signs of an issue.

if the teeth are the whole problem but has been successfully solved, then he should be willing to eat again quite quickly. If the dental hasn’t been done properly, then you may not see an improvement until it is done properly.

what is his dosage of pain meds?

do switch to weighing him daily as of today so that you can know what is going on with his food intake. It’s the only way to know you are syringe feeding him enough

if you go into your profile, account details, then you can change your location from there

also, just to double check here - Are you sure he isn’t just trying to rumblestrut?

Thanks for your reply!

I will edit location now.
The first vet gave him 0.5ml of metacam per 24 hour period. It’s one for cats and guinea pigs. I’ll attach a pic.
I weighed him around 4 days ago and he was 1kg 257g. The second vet weighed him yesterday and he was the same.
Today I’ve weighed him and he is 1kg 225g so he appears to have lost weight since yesterday but he has his dental surgery yesterday. He has tried to eat some grass but can’t seem to. He then gives up.
He is so so hard to feed with a syringe he kicks up such a fuss!
Also to note, he just can’t seem to get comfy on me. Every 15 seconds or so he shifts his back legs and he does this kind of internal jerk. Like a hiccup but in his mid to lower body. Almost as though he has had a sudden cramp. Except he doesn’t make a pain sound to accompany it.
He started doing this around 2/3 days ago or so.

somethinh tells me this is linked to another issue he may have aside form the dental work.
The dentist who worked on him loves Guinean pigs and has over 200 and I do trust him with the dental work. ..

Thanks
j

If a piggy cannot pick up or chew hay or grass and gives up trying to, then my first thought is pain and/or incorrect dental.
Guinea pigs metabolise pain meds quickly and need to be given every 12 hours. Again, what dosage has he been given?
you must be confident and forceful When syringe feeding. Its essential that he gets enough. How much syringe feed are you getting into him in a 24 hour period? Continue to monitor his weight daily and adjust syringing accordingly.

He is having 0.5ml of metacam every 24 hours. Shall I give this every 12? And I will be forceful yes, it’s in his best interest. I will ring the vet and tell them he is trying to eat but can’t seem to.

Only a vet can tell you how much and how often to give medication but what we can say is that once every 24 hours isn’t enough for guinea pigs as they metabolise meds quickly.

Hi!

Please step in with syringe feeding fibre (mushed up pellets will do in an emergency) and have your boy vet checked as soon as possible. Monitor the food intake by weighing daily until he has been seen, diagnosed and fully recovered; normal kitchen scales from the supermarket are perfectly adequate for the job.
Here are our emergency and bridging care tips to keep your piggy going until he can be seen: Emergency, Crisis and Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

Have you been given cat or dog metacam? Both are being prescribed for guinea pigs, but the dog one is triple the strength of the cat one.

Hi,
I’ve been given cat metacam. I have kitchen scales and will weigh daily and book him in for Monday with The vets. 🙏🏼

If this is a dental problem you may want to contact The Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Northampton. They are considered the best vets in the Country (maybe in the world) for guinea pig dentals. Forum members travel there from all over the UK with their piggies who have dental problems.

@furryfriends (TEAS) is one of the forums dental experts and may be able to offer you some advice.

I do hope your piggy gets well.

Would my piggy be okay travelling that far? I’ve given him some critical care mashed with banana but there is no fooling him! The only thing he willingly eats are treats! I’m going to keep trying him with the syringe food and just keep being consistent... if I can just get him to eat a little more... 😣

Yes he will be fine with the travel. With his dodgy poos he needs only pellets, hay and syringe feeding. I would stop veg and any treats. Out of interest, what are the treats? You could use mushed up pellets - he may be more willing with them. But you just have to be a little forceful I’m afraid.

Hey!
Sorry for my late reply! I’ve had some people say to not feed veggies And then others to say give him whatever he will eat as he needs to gain weight! The treats are little pea flakes. He sometimes doesn’t want them. Or can’t seem to eat them. At most he will have 2 a day anyway and they’re tiny! I'm getting more confident with syringe feed now, you feel like you’re hurting them but it’s in their best interest! I’m just feeding him now! One week post op tomorrow and he still can’t seem to get back onto food. He will have little bits here and there but that’s it x

Pda flakes are a treat which shouldn’t be fed daily.

How has his weight been? If you’re worried then take him back to the vet.

:agr:

if he still isn’t eating for himself, then there is still something wrong with his mouth. He will need to see another vet. The longer he goes without eating plenty of hay the more chance there is his teeth will overgrow again so he won’t be able to eat.

Please weigh him every day so you can monitor.
