Hi I just bought my guinea pigs home yesterday and they have not been drinking from the water bottle at all what should I do and should I be concerned

Hello, are you piggies acting strange? Are they eating well and active? I found this with my guinea pigs also and I had to put a shallow dish of water in their cage for tem to drink. But that is not always the case. Please make sure the water bottle is easy to get access to and they dont have to strain to get their water.

They are a bit strange only got them yesterday so I don’t know if that’s a frightening thing or I don’t know buts a easy access and they have been hiding in their hutch until I put a blanket over then they came out they have been eating but just not drinking

The amount piggies will drink varies and they will do k when they need to, if they are having veg then they may not drink as much. First they need to find the bottle, if can help to have a bowl of water as well. Give them time

hi, can i ask how your guinea pigs are doing now? Are they drinking? Mine have been with us for a week and have drunk nothing from the 600ml bottle. Its within reach, we have a bowl of water in there too., I am resorting to giving them lettuce and cucumber soaked in water to try to get water in to them. They otherwise seem fine and energetic but keen to know how yours are doing.

They get most of their water from the veg. They won’t go thirsty and only drink if they need to.

I’m no expert but I read a post on the forum that recommended rubbing a piece of their favourite veg or fruit on the mouth of the water bottle too to encourage them to drink. Like the other members have said though they may just need time to settle. I find one of my boys drinks a lot in comparison to my other piggy so the amount they drink can vary. I also read on the post that if they have eaten watery veg/fruit that may also mean they won’t drink as much (not that this is a problem) ☺️

I definitely wouldn’t worry if they're not drinking much like said above! I adopted a new piggy in January and she barely went near the water bottle for weeks! Compared to my Jess and her previous partner Rupert being able to almost drain a whole bottle in a day! She drinks a bit more now but not the same volume as my other two!
How old are your piggies? Any pics? :D Hope they’re settling in well!

We have two boys and one of them, as far as we could tell, drunk nothing for about 18 months after we got him. He's fine 😊

Maybe try a water bowl? Or you could maybe attach a piece of veg around the end of the bottle? I’m not sure tho

Ah thanks so much that’s really reassuring. Our piggies are settling in really well thank you. I’ll work out how to upload pics! They have been loving playtime in the garden.
