I went to pick up my little sow guinea pig (around 7-8 months old) last night and noticed she had blood around her nostril. I cleaned it up and monitored and more blood appeared.
We took a trip to the emergency vets last night who said there was no obvious cause of trauma or problems with teeth with temperature being normal too. Woke up this morning and more blood was around her little nostril. I took them to our fabulous local exotic vet this morning & he’s not too sure either. He said it doesn’t sound like respiratory as lungs and breathing are no worse than normal; could be a polyp but he’s never seen one in a pig this young (though won’t rule it out); can’t be trauma as he pushed her nose and she wasn’t phased or in pain & there was nothing in her mouth or teeth. He also said it’s not anything big up her nose as she’d be constantly sneezing, but perhaps just some dust or seed in there has irritated the inside of her nose. He also said it’s good it’s not dripping blood. He’s given me some Loxicom to ease inflammation but if it gets worse (dripping blood) we have to go again to out of hours or back to him tomorrow. Similarly, if it doesn’t get better she has to go on Monday for a camera down her nose but she’d have to go under for it, which isn’t ideal as my two sows already have respiratory issues and are young.
Has anyone experienced this before or know what it could be? Worried!
