Woody has just had to have an emergency trip to the vets as he had a bad nosebleed.

Our first theory was he may have poked his nose with hay but as it was coming from both nostrils that theory was very unlikely.

They took him in for x-rays and they were clear however the vet said she did notice a possible trauma to his soft pallate at the roof of his mouth and believes it may be this that caused the bleeding as could be going to his nose.

He is eating ok (albeit less due to the sedative for an x-ray).

Question is has anybody had any experience of something similar?

If the bleeding doesn't stop (has for now) by tomorrow they have said I will need to be referred for a CT but I am not sure if that is viable financially.

Thank you

I am very sorry.

Severe and persistent nose bleeding through both nostrils or down the back is not good news. It is thankfully rare but that is no consolation when you have to make difficult choices for a piggy of yours, like I had to for Carwyn in 2018.
The only warning I had was one bloody sneeze two months earlier before he suddenly started haemorrhaging through the nose and throat from the brain over the course of late evening ans night after showing vague signs of being not quite well for a few days but nothing anybody could put a finger on. I can however not say whether my own experience is relevant for you. There was no noticeable injury to the roof of Carwyn's mouth.

We had to send him to the Rainbow Bridge as he was clearly already on his way there and in his case any other measures would have come way too late.
:(

My fingers are very firmly crossed that the bleeding has stopped for good.

So sorry to hear this, Woody is fine in himself otherwise and the bleeding has now stopped aside from the occasional light sneeze where I imagine it is a little itchy.

He is eating a little funny so I do believe the theory of a cut to his soft pallate (he is a chewer and has chewed a bit of hard plastic that makes up his cage) but obviously if his symptoms get worse/ don't lessen I will make the decision.

He is an elderly pig at 5 and has various other issues so we have pain medication which I have been advised to keep giving also.

Please keep him on his painkiller. I sincerely hope that it is just a mouth injury that is healing on its own. It is always an anxious time when all you can do is basically wait and see which way things are going because you care so deeply and your mind keeps racing.

It does help me personally to stare into the abyss and face the worst case scenario for a few minutes. Then I can tell myself: I have been able to bear my worst fear. Anything else can only be better. I will be able to face it and deal with it because I have the strength to do it within me.
