I just noticed my pig's nose has red spots around, and I'm afraid if he had a nosebleed? I gave him a little bit of tomato a couple of hours ago but he didn't really like it so I think the red colour isn't from the tomatoes but from something else. I searched his fur and I didn't find any wounds. The inside of his right nostril seems completely clean, and his left nostril seems also clean but I think I saw just a very small reddish dot inside. Here are the pictures.

By the way, he acts completely normal, nothing unusual, but I'm very worried IMG_20190717_182741.webpIMG_20190717_182748.webp

Hi!

Please have him checked for something stuck in the nose (like some stiff hay) which usually causes a big brownish sneeze but can cause a skin cut and a little bleeding and some almighty sneezes, a polyp or - which is sadly a possibility - a brain tumour.

A nose bleed in a guinea pig should always be taken seriously and vet checked. Nose bleeds are pretty rare, but they happen occasionally; most commonly caused by hay that has got into a nostril. We see about 2-3 serious nose bleeds in a year on here that are usually diagnosed as brain tumours.

I lost my Carwyn last autumn to the latter. The first sign was a one of bleed like yours about three months before he started going downhill with no other symptoms until he started haemorrhaging through the nose and down his throat which was when I took him to the vets for pts/euthanasia. The vet I saw sadly came to the same conclusion. :(

I sincerely hope that you get better news!

He really does need to see a vet, hopefully a vet can put your mind at ease. My Peanut had two nosebleeds last year, no reason could be found for it but the vet thinks it was probably hay pokes. Peanut didn't have anything left up his nose to see but your boy needs to be checked just in case he does have a bit of hay or something up there.

We had a sow in at the rescue called Mabel who had chronic nosebleeds.Of course we took her to the vet, they anaesthetised her and x rayed her, had a good look up her nose etc. and couldn't see anything. Turns out it was slightly high blood pressure popping tiny blood vessels in her nose when she got over excited, although there was quite a lot of blood! They just advised not letting her get too excited, she's since gone on to a new home with her sister Sooty and as far as I'm aware hasn't had one since!
