So, I finally got my pigs!

The artists formerly known as Ralph and BB from Layla's rescue in North Shields, they've been renamed Ginko and Thorn respectively and have been settling in nicely to their new home with me, here in W.Yorkshire. I even had a nice long cuddle with Ginko (formerly Ralph) today, although Thorny-butt remains aloof :)

However, just as a matter of interest - they're both very quiet. The most I've heard in the past few days is a bit of murmuring at mealtime, and some huffing from Ginko when young Thorn gets a bit stroppy - these teenagers with their terrible manners and flighty ways, he seems to say!

So is it that I'm jumping the gun and worrying too early while they're still settling in, or is it normal for some pigs to be so stoic?

Pleased to hear they have settled in so well. These boys have always been very quiet - but they may as they get used to you find their voices!

Thanks, I thought it might be too soon to worry - but they're both taking treats from my hand now, and tomorrow will be their first big cleanout day!

I've been brushing up poops twice a day, midday and evening, but I think if I leave the fleece any longer I could make decorations out of the crystalized pee :)>>> :P

Some cavies are naturally quiet. I was previously owned by a Coronet sow, who only made a noise whilst being bathed or groomed. Otherwise, I cannot recall ever hearing her make a sound. On the other hand, her daugther, a Crested Smooth-haired cavy, was the noiest cavy I have been owned by, and would be heard regularly throughout the day. However, the difference in temperament was also noticable. My Coronet sow was very docile, whereas my Crested Smooth-haired sow was very boisterous.

My piggies were quiet when i first got them too, they are just getting used to there new environment.
Also piggies have quiet days sometimes and other days you can't shut them up! :)

It probably is just because it's early days however I've also had a very quiet guinea pig. My Yossi was almost mute for the whole of his 3 yrs until his cagemate died and it was only then, when he was left on his own, that I first heard him wheek. (His cagemate was very vocal and did more than enough wheeking for the both of them!)

In terms of his voice, he's still quiet by the usual pig standards, but at least he's finally found his voice. In every other way he's the same pig he always was though, even when silent, so I wouldn't worry too much if they don't pipe up! :)

We have 3 girls and 1 boy, the girls are always really vocal, however our little boy is still really quiet, we hear him occassionally and I can always tell as his squeaks are different.

Hehe, it must have been just settling in blues - I was late getting up to get their breakfast this morning, and I was greeted by a chorus of very impatient WHEEKS!

My girls didn't make a sound for about the first week, but now they are extremely vocal!

The only time they don't wheek much is when they are in season - then it gets replaced by a lot of rumbling instead!

We didn't hear a sound out of Stripes for the first week then one day he let out the loudest wheak I've ever heard, I think he was just building up to it! lol
He's not very vocal now, tends to chatter his teeth while Spike does the wheaking for breakfast. He has to be really excited to let rip with his loud wheekiness!
