I have been out handling the new girlies this afternoon. Ive picked them up and held them talking to them for a few minutes each. Both were obviously not impressed but one made a squeaky noise. I know that they have a number of noises they make to communicate, but as soon as she made this noise i instantly put her down. Guess my question is should I have? It was almost like she was in pain, obvs she wasnt.

I really want them to get used to being handled but dont want to stress them at the same time! mallethead

They are making noises because they are scared. This is just normal and they will do this while you pick them up as they do not like it. All you can do is to carry on.

So even though they are making noise in protest I still go along with it? Not put them straight back into their hutch?

I guess their not going to get used to me unless I carry on. Hopefully they will settle down soon! :)Thanks

Yeah, I would persist with the handling. Our newest piggie is about 12 weeks old and is very skittish, although is getting bolder. He sounds like I'm trying to kill him before I even get my hands round him!

Lol they are not that noisy, just the one when I had her out.

I just want them used to being handled before my 6 year old twins come along. They are very good and are gentle but they are going to want to handle them quite a bit. They are off to Bristol this weekend so it will give me plenty on time to bond with the new girlies :) :)

Do you have anything to hold them in? Like a cosy - see picture. They are great especially for kids. You'll be doing exceedingly well if you can convince them that being cuddled is fun in one weekend :))

Lol, the weekend will be a great start. I'm not expecting miracles :)

No I dont have anything like that, maybe just a fleece wrapped around them in my lap may help, thanks !

The fleece coseys definatly help, but please be aware, it took me over a month of handling twice a day to get my pair to settle down, your girls may need to be patient.

My children will respect and feel our guineas needs, they have too! I'm not nieave (sp?) I know it's a slow process:)p

Ive had my girls in the house this evening for cuddles with me and my mum. Do Guineas purr? Mine was making a v strange noise now and again mostly when I was stroking her near her bottom end? It was def not a squeak!

Thanks
Becky

One of the other piggy's only have to nudge Humbug and she sounds like she's being murdered.. some are just really soft 'uns and perseverance with quite a few treats involved usually wins them over.. eventually;)

Oh right, good to know! As stated in another post they dont like their back end being touched and thats the only time she was doing it.

Good job I asked as I **** would have thought it was a good noise, almost like puring.

Thanks!
