Hi All

I just bought to guniea pigs today and tonight i bought them out indiviully to spend time with them. Both of them where making like coughing noises or like sneeze noises. What does it mean and how can i tell when they are content?

I had both them snuggled in my dressing gown and talking to them.

one was more active than the other.

Thanks

Charlene :)

Hi there, congrats on the new additions!

Here is a good link that lets you hear the different guinea pig sounds and what they mean.
Guinea Pig Sounds

If none of these are what your pigs where doing, then look up some videos of coughing and sneezing pigs on youtube. If this is what your wee ones are doing and they are doing it regularly, accompanied by any changes in appetite/weight/demeanor/breathing or you notice any nasal discharge then please have them seen by a vet to rule out any respiratory infections.

I hope the link helps you identify the sounds- their environment is all new to them so they might just be feeling a little wary and letting you know!

Thanks Adelle for replying...it aint letting me hear the noises for some strange reason. I will monitor the noises coming from them when i am handling them. I just like to cuddle and clam them they r soo cute!

Hi and welcome!

If you have got shop piggies, then you may want to have them checked for a respiratory infection by a vet if the coughing and sneezing continues and especially if you noticed crusty noses and eyes! That is not at all rare. You can claim back the vet cost from the shop if the infection has been caused by exposure in the shop.

You may find the information for our new owner in these guides here helpful; they contain answers to the most often asked for problems, including links to recommended vets.
We don't have audio guides because a lot of the sounds are rather similar and need to be interpreted in a situational context, but you'll catch up soon with that!

The link provided is a very good one from Jackie's Guinea Pigs. I can't access the sounds through my phone but I can through my ipad and laptop - I suspect its a technical sound card issue. If you can try on another device it's well worth listening as you can learn a lot from the sound she has identified.

As Wiebke says, if there is any concern of coughs or sneezes it is a good idea to have them checked by a vet.
