I'm new to guinea pig ownership and got my first ever piggies 6 days ago from a rescue. They're brothers and supposed to be around 5 weeks old. I've noticed that they barely seem to eat or drink during the day yet when I check on them in the morning their food has gone down quite a bit, same for their water. Is this normal behavour or do I have nocturnal piggies?

I'm also worried that they may start fighting soon, the bigger of the two seems to be stopping the other one from going in the house. I've also heard alot of purring and chattering of teeth going on. I'm scared that they may need to be separated.

Please help.

Hi! Welcome to the forum!

Scared new piggies quite often come only out under cover of darkness. give them time to settle in. My last lot spent the first week as lumps under fleece and then kept me awake at night!

Here are some tips for settling new guinea pigs:

You are in no danger of having to separate your boys. They are simply sorting out the hierarchy in their new relationship and territory.

This is some more general info, which you mind find useful:

It's quite a bit to read through, but it will hopefully help you with settling in your boys.

I'm looking forward to hearing how you are getting on and seeing some pics when they are settled!

Thank you very much! I was very worried but all the advice is sure to help me such alot. :)

Lot's of good advice from Wiebke. It may also be worth putting two houses/hideys in, as some will sleep cuddled up together and others like their own space. (It probably says that somewhere though in all the links above.) Well done on getting rescue piggies. Where abouts are you in Cheshire. x

nutmeg - I'm from the Northwich area if you know it?

daleksarah - I'm glad my piggies aren't the only ones, I thought they were just being odd!
