Hi,

After a long time looking for guinea pigs we finally found a pet store that had them. The two guinea pigs (Gus, Joey) are malnourished, have patches without hair, and joey cant make any noise. I am wondering why one of them can make a noise. Gus can make noises very well, but Joey tries to make noises but nothing comes out except for a bit of air. Is this a problem?

Thanks, Pepijn

Hi, I'm not sure why one can make noise and one can't, but I would encourage you to get both piggies seen by a vet as soon as possible. Are they eating, drinking, peeing, and pooping normally? The bald patches sound like cause for concern. All piggies have a small bald patch behind their ears and their ears themselves have little to no hair on them, but it sounds like you're describing something more extensive. The sneezing is cause for concern. The occasional one off sneeze may just be totally normal, but if it's more than that then they need to see a vet. I've attached some guides here. Please read them for more information and get your piggies to a vet as soon as possible.

Some piggies are quieter than others anyway but i suppose it might also be linked to the other health issues and his background.
I absolutely agree that your piggies both need vet treatment ASAP as it sounds as if they have several health problems which need formal diagnosis and treatment.

While you are waiting for the vet appointment, Please do weigh them both daily so you can be sure they are now eating enough hay and are starting to put on weight. If they aren’t, then you will need to step In and syringe feed them.

Obviously you’ve not given much information on the health issues, but there is a chance those missing patches of fur could be down to ringworm so you would be wise to exercise extreme hygiene just in case it is. Ringworm is highly contagious and people can catch it from piggies.

I hope they are ok and recover well. Do keep us posted on what the vet says

Thanks Guys!

We got them yesterday from a pet store that is not particularly our first choice. The pet store didn't have much choice for food or water. It was about 10 piggies and one small food bowl and water bottle. Ever since they are with us, they have been drinking, and eating lots. The one that can't make noise is now making noise fine (?). I don't know why but he is doing great.

It definitely does not look like ringworm. I think it might be because they were poorly cared for in the pet store.

I'll update you if anything bad happens.

Thanks for your help!

Please do get them checked by a vet. That is recommended for all pet shop piggies, but even more so when they are already showing symptoms of illness (sneezing, hair loss (can be caused by parasites - mange mites for example can be fatal without treatment)
Do also check their sexes yourself Or have a vet confirm they are both the same sex

Unfortunately there are no vets that treat exotic animals in my area :(

I can confirm that they are both boys.

Do you have access to vet care at all? Any vet is better than no vet. We cant know how severe the sneezing or hair loss is but all we can say is that those symptoms do require a vet to see them and start any appropriate treatment.
It is helpful to us if members at least let us know the country they are in so we can tailor our advice accordingly.

Philippines

We have vets that treat dogs and cats. I will not bring them to those vets, they will have no idea what to do with guinea pigs.

At this point, I can not confirm that he is losing any hair, for that I must wait for a few more days to see if he is losing any more hair.

I do know one that MIGHT be able to treat guinea pigs, but very limited in their ability to do so. Either way, it is still a long way away and expensive. I must confirm that they are sick before I decide to have a go at that vet. Don't worry, I know what a sick piggy looks/acts like, so no need to explain that :)

Thanks for your help!

Well done for getting those piggies out of a bad situation. Guinea pigs hide illnesses very well and when they start to look ill they are really ill. I have had guinea pigs now for over 5 years and I know my piggies really well so can spot minor differences in their behaviour so know they aren't quite right. Please do take them to a vet for correct treatment. If they have lost fur, as said above, that is a major concern. It could be from lice which are very difficult to see and incredibly itchy and needs vet grade treatment to get rid of.

Welcome to the forum.
I echo what has already been said.
Hope you can get a good vet to check them
They sound very lucky to have been found by you.
