Hi everyone, I'm new here and not quite sure how it works, but I'm having a problem I was hoping someone had experience with.

I have two female piggies and don't usually notice their nipples but recently I've been picking up my long-haired pig and noticed one really large nipple, I didn't think too much till this afternoon. I picked her up to clean the cage and it almost felt like the nipple was coming off!

I am assuming it is her nipple as I have googled it and it looks exactly like the black guinea pig nipples coming up on forums.

I had a look and I genuinely believe that whatever it is is half off her body and I'm really unsure what to do.

I've had these piggies now for three years with no problems, and I am a student so really don't want to have to go to the vet unless necessary.

Thank you for any help!

Hello and welcome

Are you sure it isn’t crust coming off the nipple rather than the nipple coming off itself in which case I would strongly recommend a vet appointment although I’d expect there to be blood if the nipple was coming off? Is it possible to get a photo? x

Thank you so much for responding!

I might just be dramatic in feeling like it's coming off, it's just the edges feel not properly attached if that makes sense?

These are the only pigs I've owned so I'm not sure what it's supposed to look like normally, but I've attached some photos x

It’s not coming off so don’t worry about that.

Look at the other nipple - Does it look the same?

Thank you, I did think I was being a bit dramatic!

I have the two of them in the photos, the other one does look quite large, and a bit crusty but doesn't feel quite as bad

If she is 2 years old or over and has crusty nipples then a vet check is needed as it can be a sign of ovarian cysts

Don’t worry, the nipple isn’t coming off but like mentioned, a vet check wouldn’t go amiss if her nipples are crusty just to rule out ovarian cysts

My Elizabeth had crusty nipples, I had her vet checked just to make sure she didn’t have ovarian cysts, she didn’t and the vet said it was just normal for her x

Thanks so much for the replies!

I'll have a check with the vet next week for a look, and my neighbour who has piggies has told me to moisturise it just in case it's dry skin so I'll do that too and fingers crossed she'll be good as new! X
