Having done some cage research I've decided on a Ferplast 120. I've dropped on a 2nd hand one and obviously want to give it a good clean. Would do you recommend for cleaning the cages between piggies and on cleaning days?

I'm going to order some absorbent fleece liners from ziggy piggies. Is this all I need on the base?

I've been reading about the dangers of hay cages. What do people put the hay in?

Sorry, I accidentally posted before I had finished.

What bedding do you have in pigloos?

I put towels under the fleece to absorb the pee, and I put an extra hand towel and extra layer of fleece under their little hideys as they like peeing there more.

I use little bowls for their high quality food hay, I used to use hay racks but felt they could be dangerous so I stick to using ceramic bowls now, I have 4 dotted around the cage, along with a big pile of cheaper hay for sleeping on (I don't use the good hay for sleeping on as they pee all over it)

Forgot to mention, I use antibacterial wipes from Sainsburys (Sainsburys own) for cleaning the cage, there's no bleach in them at all and they kill off flu/MRSA etc

Thank you for that. Great tip about antibacterial wipes as I was expecting to need specialist cleaner.

I think @Beans&Toast has covered it all! As an alternative to towels I use disposable puppy pads under the fleece. I didn't know about those wipes (so as I keep saying I learn something new every day on the forum ) so I've been using Johnsons clean and safe small animal disinfectant spray for years. Works fine but I may switch to wipes.

I used to use that spray too but I find these wipes so much quicker and easier. It was my Mum who spotted them, they're hospital grade but no harmful bleach

Great. I'm sure I will have a load more questions before I get my piggies. 1 step at a time

If the second hand cage you are getting has white pee stains on the bottom the best thing you can use is white vinegar. This will remove the stains if you leave it on for a few minutes. I do this with my hay trays once a week and then wipe the vinegar off and then clean with pet safe disinfectant to get rid of vinegar.

Another great tip , thank you. There are no stains in the cage, so that is good news.

They have also given me cardboard tunnels and some of the little wooden bridges. Are they safe to use as I won't be able to clean them easily?

I personally wouldn't use anything I couldn't thoroughly clean second hand.I use fleece and litter trays. The litter trays have fleece pegged over them (is a c&c run) I have aubiouse and then hay in the litter trays.Keeps majority of hay off fleece and they do most of wees in them
