xx>>>Hello all
Just want to find out how many of you JUST use newspaper and hay to line cages / hutches? I have had a post op piggie on it all week and his wet eye he had has cleared up too ! so wondering if it is the shavings.Rest of the brood all ok and i have never had respiratory probs.
I run a small rescue and 20 of my own ! so any savings mean more money for veg in this financial climate ! I found it much quicker to clean out too.
I normally line all cages with newspaper and then shavings on top but as its worked so well for peaches and romeo this week i am thinking of trying other piggies too.I know there are lots of products on the market but they are too expensive for the quantitys we use.

I used too but obviously you have to clean them out a lot more but it is quick and easy. I know use newspaper and megazorb.

hi i use just newspaper, and hay in a hay rack up one end which they pull onto the newspaper, i use it as its a lot quicker to clean out and a lot cheaper :) mine are indoors in an 8ft by 4.5ft c&c cage so anything else is expensive.

i have a double tier cage, in the bottom i use newspaper with megazorb on top and in the top i just use newspaper but have to change it daily as its totally soaking by the evening and pooped up to the max! They also pull out their hay to cover the paper grrrr lol

Thanks for those replies. With running our little rescue now i am just trying to look at ways to save money and people happily collect me bags of paper ! Cleaning out much quicker even if it has to be done more. I am going to roll out a trial to all my cages for a month. X

I've only ever used newspaper and hay. I clean out every 3 days average and put in fresh hay for them every evening. Shavings are supposed to cause respiratory problems for pigs so I would advise to get rid of it altogether anyway :))

I just use newspaper and hay when they're in their hutch :)

Sometimes just pop a handful of carefresh in the corners and under the bottle too

hi we use fleece which we have cut to size and sewn an old towel to the back of i some times add newspaper to the bottom underneath but not always. we clean the cages every two days and i hot wash the fleeces and air dry. i sprinkle hay over the fleeces too they seem happy enough on that we did orginally use sawdust but we didnt like it and we go through alot anyways due to gerbils and degu's that we have. its real easy this way you shake off the poop and hay what ever and bung it in the washer, just make sure you hot wash after and wipe out door seal otherwise your clothes will be hairy lol. I'm not sure how cost effective it would be for you with that many ginny piggers thats alot of washes lol
good luck

Heyloo lovely, I keep mine on newspaper, wood shavings, and hay. They're all fine, I've never had any problems. But I do think keeping the post op piggy on fleece would be really good for alot of reasons. Firstly, if you get a light coloured fleece, you'll be able to see any weeping or any issues, before you might usually see them on him. It also just means he's extra comfy and that nothing can irritate his eyes.

But that's just my opinion, you don't have to counter it in :) x

My local rescue, house all their piggies on newspaper and hay, and just whip it all out everyday. I don't clean out everyday, maybe every 3-4 days so I use megazorb and hay, I find it less messy and more absorbant than woodshavings.

I used to use newspaper under the megazorb but found it less messy to just shovel out the megazorb. If I've run out of megazorb I use just newspaper and hay, tbh I don't think my gp's care as long as they have hay.

I use newspaper on the top level of my C&C cage and shavings on the floor as the top area is where their food is kept so its much easier to clean and remove the newspaper daily.

All my foster piggies are on just hay, with a pile of hay over half the cage.

It so much easier to clean, less waste, cheaper and muh better for the piggies.

Fleece/vet bed is a pain to us for a rescue due to the cost and being able to wash them. I use fleece/vetbed for poorly piggies or in carriers.

I have had loads of piggies come in with weepy eyes, sneezing, sore feet, which have all cleared up on their own when they are no longer on wood shavings.

newspaper

I used to use fleece, but have been so exhausted recently due to my M.E and it's surprising how brushing hay off the fleece drained so much of my energy so I've switched to newspaper and hay with puppy pads underneath. I change the newspaper every day and the puppy pad every other everyday. It's been a godsend for me as it makes cleaning so much easier. I realise puppy pads would be expensive for you, but if you use a thick layer of newspaper you'll be fine. I don't manage to collect that many newspapers so need the puppy pads too.
Love Jude xx
