Heya Just wanted to ask if news paper and hay is actually fine to use for bedding?:S I've seen and heard people use it but I thought newspaper would harm them if they eat it because of the ink?
Ink is now a soya based dye is i remember correctly, there is no harm if the piggies eat it, however if they have plenty of hay there should be no need for them to be eating it! (Unless they just like the taste i guess)
Is that for all kinds of newspaper? I just used one called the Chronicle and oh that's great then! I have just changed them over now was using wood shavings and I don't even know why Never again :/ terrible stuff for my guinea pigs Any tips on how to layer it and such if you can help?
i recommend still using a thin layer of bedding such as woodshavings just to help absorb moisture, i tried just hay and newpaper for my upper level and it was soaked after one wee and a bit smelly too !
So i just use a small layer of bedding, which is still cheaper than filling the cage with it, and i put a bit more in the back where he wee's then place hay in his bedding area
I currently use a litter tray lined with newspaper and hay. I use The Sun for bedding and my piggies are ok shredding it up and stuff but not sure about other newspapers. As Twiams said I would suggest maybe something to help absorb any urine as newspaper and hay get soiled and smelly very quickly. It's not too bad when it is something small like a litter tray as that is pretty quick and easy to change. But if you are using it on a bigger scale them a thing layer of something else would be a good idea. Megazorb is supposed to be very good as it is dust free and cheap for the amount you get.
I alternate my boys between fleece and newpspaper and hay - I have found that laying newspaper down, and then a layer of Pampers Dri nites bed pads works really well....the base stays dry for a week! You may need to change the newspaper if it gets wet, and remove the wet hay, but the Dri nites pads are fab. They are £3.51 for 7 in Tesco.
