Hello again, some more advice needed please. :)

I know somebody who has a sow who has just had babies and has also just discovered that mum and babies all have lice. The babies are only a matter of days old and I wonder what is the best way to treat them. Obviously the babies cannot be left until 12 weeks before shampooing as they will be in a terrible state and mum must be very uncomfortable. Any ideas on the safest way to treat all of them?

:^-Hi there,i know I'm new on here so i dont really like to be pemature with my reply's! Surely this must of meant that the sow has not been treated:( The sow would of passed these on to the new born. They are not born with lice. I always spray my guineas homes and ivermectin them on a regular basis.I'm not sure what happens when the sow gives birth,if the sow was treated before hand this would of been prevented.Surely it would be dangerous to treat mum with young feeding pups?:(

Hi there. The main thing is to get the right treatment. I would suggest you email Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas as she will be able to advise you on a safe treatment for mum and babes.

Some of our rescue members may also be around later to give advice as they often have experience of treating pigs of different ages with parasite problems. :)

Thanks Flips, I will get back in touch with Chrissie and see if there is a safe way of treating them all. :)

Susan, from my own experience and I am sure most guinea owners will say the same thing, the pig can be fine one day and have lice the next. It happened to me just the other week, I bathe my pigs throughout the year with lice shampoo and ivermec them but still one of mine had lice … they can come off the hay. The babies will have gotten them from mum and its unfortunate it has happened but now we just need to find out the safest treatment for them and make them comfortable.

Do you treat them even if they dont have lice? :^- Surely this is just promoting resistance against Ivermec?!? Its already happening in sheep and cows, non-essential worming with the same wormer has led to resistance! Even in human medicine there's resistance, MRSA for example, due to over use of antibiotics and them being dished out when their not needed.

Hi ellie, the advice i took from the box of pepex i brought so i just followed the instructions. If this is not a good idea perhaps i shouldn't do this.? Why would they put this information on the instructions? I just thought i was looking after the well being of my guineas,x

Anita,as you can see I'm new here so I'm learning all the time! I didnt realise that guineas could get lice from hay. They say you learn something new every day and i sure have.Hope mum & babies are made comfortable soon, sue,x

It was just a thought, I'm doing a vet degree and during our parasitology course it was drummed into us about resistance and underdosing, too many dosings, treating when there's not need etc...

Who is the manufacturer? Where did you get the ivermec from?

Just a thought, but they might have put it on the instructions so you keep buying it and they make money..

Susan I am also learning all the time. It was after my first experience with lice that I learned they came off hay, I freaked and had no idea where they had come from but now I just check regularly and deal with it when it happens. I bathe about every 2 months as I have mostly longhairs and they tend to get a bit mucky at times, bathtime is usually followed by a haircut!

Hi Anitta,i got this treatment from this site [email protected] ,i paid 17.99 for this then visiting another pet shop i see that it was alot cheaper.Perhaps i should bathe them like you do rather than treating them with ivermectin like the leaflet tell's you.suex

from as far as i know ivermec doesnt treat lice! it only treats mites.

you can bath the guineas in Johnsons lice and mite shampoo, BUT DONT leave it on wash it straight off, i had to do this in a sow and her 2 week old babies and they were fine..As long as its washed off straight away they should be fine:)

Using lice and easy from chrissy gorgeous guineas(aromatherapy rather than pesticides), I have washed 1 week old babies that came into rescue. You can do the normal treatment on mum, on the babies i did 2 applications of shampoo rub in for 30s-1min and then wash off and repeat. (but be really careful not to get water in the ears and up the nose) making sure you shampoo everywhere in there armpits, under the chin etc etc. You will find that it may take a month! to get rid of them completely as you can't leave the shampoo on long enough. Remember to always put them back into a clean cage that has been throughly clean with pet disinfectant!
