Hi everyone

So I posted a thread a couple of weeks back saying that myself and my daughter were looking into getting a guinea pig but as we are in Glasgow there are no reputable rescues nearby. Well as it turned out we didn't need to look far at all for a piggy in need of rescuing but that is a story for another thread!

Anyway to cut a long story short we are now happily enslaved to a gorgeous boar called Biscuit and we currently have him in a ferplast 100 cage which he seems thrilled with (this is a temporary measure only!) We are currently using carefresh bedding in the cage which as you can imagine is going to get pretty pricey and really I want to use fleece.

I'm going out on a fleece mission tomorrow and want to know what it is I'm looking for, from reading previous threads I think I need puppy pads, a mattress protector and some fleece. Now I think, again from reading previous threads, that b&m will be my best bet would that be right? There is a huge one near us luckily. I am however slightly confused as to what exactly I'm looking for in terms of the mattress protector and the fleeces.

Mattress protector wise is it the quilted top poly cotton ones I'm after, a waterproof one or a terry towelling one?

Fleece wise does it have to be the pet section type ones or could I go for something a bit fluffier? As long as it's 100% polyester will it still wick? We have some gorgeous cosy fleece throws on the couch that are quite cuddly and 100% poly but I'm unsure if these would do the same job?

Apologies for so many questions, i can imagine how annoying I am but I want to get this right for Biscuit. He's not had a good start in life and he deserves the best we can offer him :-) Thanks guys

You are not annoying at all. It is lovely you care. With fleece I just used towels and changed it all every three days. You will need to remove poops two or three times a day. Any fleece is fine as long as it is 100% polyester. I switched to vetbed and prefer it. It seems to stay dryer. Just to let you know I got mine from dogproductsdirect.

With fleece you need to wash and dry it three times without fabric conditioner before you can use it.

I did think about vetbed but I figured if I made some cage liners in fleece for this cage just now then that may be cheaper than sourcing two sets of vetbed bearing in mind this cage is only a stop gap? Plus I can't lie I like the idea of making matching cosies and things....I'm quite tragic lol Thank you so much for the reply :-)

Goth mummy do you just use the fleece on top of the puppy pads without an extra layer? Does that work sufficiently? And yes, it all happened rather fast!

I use incontinence pads then flee e but have smaller pieces of fleece on towel where they wee sometimes. These get changed when wet then main fleece every week..

I use puppy pads and fleece from B&M too as its really cheap!
I have puppy pads on bottom, towels in middle then fleece on top. the towels may need changed regularly, however they probably wont need changed as much if you just have the 1 piggie. The fleece I get is a 2 pack, they are plain colours but they are only like £3.99 for the 2. Plus I get patterned soaker pads and lap pads which I also put in the cage to make it more pretty :) cavy-couture are really good for making soaker pads and stuff, and I find if I have soaker pads in, the towels underneath the fleece tend to last a little longer as my piggies pee on the pads :) hope this is helpful. Let us know what you get :)

I just use disposable puppy pads pads underneath the fleece, I double up the covered area as they wee more there. I used puppy pads I bought a massive box of from Wayfair but we've just finished them so the next ones will be from Home Bargains or P@H. The fleeces were from Poundland, little ones for £1 each. Also in their hay/litter try and straw hidey I line them with a few sheets of newspaper than hay and I empty and clean them out every evening as otherwise they get really gross. I do full cage cleans every 5 days.

I have just changed to fleece today! So I'm glad you asked this, I have gone for fleece over a layer of newspaper and a hay bed. I am also armed with puppy pads and towels. I think its just going to be trial and error until I find what works. The girls looked slightly confused going onto the fleece for the first time (its what I line my leather couch with when they are playing on it!) But seem to be adjusting.

You need something absorbent under the fleece.Newspaper doesn't soak up pee enough. The fleece wicks liquid through but needs an absorbent layer to go into so either the pads or towels.I use puppy pads all over the ground sheet (don't use correx) then my main fleece then where they wee sometimes smaller pieces of towel and fleece that get changed when wet.I have litter trays with newspaper then finacard then hay.The cage has a fleece pegged over where the litter trays are as they pee undercover
