Greeting from Florida, USA. We put down new sod a week ago and I am very curious how long to wait before the piggies can get to munching on it. Due to the farm using fertilizer on the grass. I figure 3-4 weeks it should be 'clean'. Not sure so I turn to you all my expert panel on everything GP! Thank you.

Hi

With any new lawn/grass, we strongly recommend to wait until you have mowed the grass 3-4 times to allow the chemicals in the green blades to grow out. The chemicals are taken up through the roots into the leaves so you have to wait until they are no longer present in the leaves before your new lawn is safe to eat for the piggies.
Because grass will grow differently in different climates, seasons and temperatures, it is a safer way of describing the necessary wait than giving you a time frame which may not the correct one for you.

Just as an added precaution, I laid new turf this year and it gave one of my piggies bloat. She got over it in a couple of days with meds and tlc but it was a shock. My other two were absolutely fine... indeed we've never had a bloat in 10 years or more. They were used to a heap of meadow grass every day but it seems that the turf was a different kind of grass. I should have done the bit-by-bit method for Louise (who is a greedy fluff) but I learnt the hard way!

Thank you so much. I will definitely wait and stay on the conservative side. I appreciate the reply.

Aw, that was scary about the bloat. I am going to go conservative and wait a bit longer before letting the piggies graze.
