My first and now rather old guinea hutch really isn't suitable for outside use anymore, and if I am honest, is knackered - as I said to Mum tonight 'it ideally needs a new floor, new walls, new back, and new roof...the doors are ok though!'

So Snickers and her future hubby need a new home!

A while ago I think it was Flips who recommended this

http://www.ukrabbithutches.co.uk/guineapighutches.html

and I just wondered if anyone had got one, or one of their runs?

Or if anyone has any other good recommendations at all? Must be 4ft x 2ft ideally, will settle for 22" wide at a push. None of this 16" nonsense please!

It's ridiculous, they are either very expensive or far too small. I can see how people end up with substandard hutches. It's a bit unfair really, that those who make the right size hutches don't sell them for a lower price, as people will just think 'ah this pets at home hutch says 'guinea pig' on it and is only £40, let's buy that!'

If you are even remotely okay with woodwork (know how to cut a length of wood, use a drill, screwdriver and some wood glue) you'd be able to make yourself a large hutch at a fraction of the cost.

We just made a new 6ft by 2ft double hutch for about £80. On that basis I agree that all the hutches you see in shops are vastly overpriced.

See I can actually manage all that, apart from the drill, I am banned from the drill as I am a bit too accident prone for power tools.

What wood did you use Natalie? Do you know I think I am going to bite the bullet and make one! Then I can get it my size, how I want it, and not have to sit at home waiting for delivery!

We used plywood for the roof/floor/partitions, tongue and groove cladding for the back, sides and bedding area door and then like softwood lengths for all the upright supports. The mesh came from a garden centre and everything else we bought from Wickes or B&Q. We already had some spare roofing felt and stuff for trim. You will have stain the wood too which was messy but we found it didn't really take too long. All in all our hutch was finished in about 3 days, but then it had to stand to let all the stain dry and the fumes air off.

I used these pictures as a plan -

You can basically see how they've made an initial frame and then filled it in.

Thank you that is brilliant. I am going to pop down the timber yard later I think, what with a whole four days building time ahead of me! I have some mesh already as I am halfway through building a run.

Thanks so much!

That exact hutch hun?

As that is very cheap I agree! Their own rather rubbish guinea pig hutch (which is too small and the one I opened the door on fell apart) is £42

Yes, a hutch n fun one, not thier own ones which look quite unsubstantial. It is tounge and grooved, slip out tray it was out the front think I might get one at that price:))

What p@H are you near if you don't mind me asking? I know you're in Sussex but it's a big place lol

I saw it in the Eastbourne branch, it is not on their website but they had it displayed outside:))

We are going to Eastbourne tomorrow to pick up my possible new piggy! lol. I went to the timber yard and priced the materials to make my own tho, and it works out cheaper, so I am going to get building thanks to the inspiration of Natalie!
