Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum, so 'hello'!

It is also a long time since I had any piggies (about 25 years!), so please bear with me, am obviously wanting to provide them with the best home possible.

I've just got two boars, one is 12 wks old, the other is 8 wks old, from different litters. The older one is trying to mate with the other, lots of squeaking and running round, is this normal/expected behaviour? should I separate them, or would this cause more problems?

thanks in advance
Jo

Hi Jo, I'm Jo too and I live in Derby!

I have 3 boys that live together, a Daddy and 2 sons. They're 2 yrs old now. When they first went together, they did lots of mounting and chasing and teeth chattering. They're just working out who's boss. Mine still do it occasionally but don't do each other any harm and get on well.

I wouldn't separate them unless they're really going for each other and fighting, baring teeth etc.

Hiya Jo (great name!)

thanks for the reply, think I am just being a bit too anxious, I only got them y/day, so yes, think it is more a case of them working out who is boss. There's definitely no fighting or baring teeth, just chattering and chasing. Think I'm just being over cautious in wanting to make sure they're both ok.

I'd forgotten how cool and cute piggies could be!

Hi Friendlyfox, thanks for the website link, will go and have a look ...................

Hi Jo,
Welcome! :) I have 6 boars all in pairs. The mounting is for dominance. The pigs may display signs of teeth chattering, rumble strutting and the mating but as long as they don't physically fight then don't seperate. I am always on hand with a spray gun of water and a towel incase I need to seperate.

I don't agree with taking boars apart once they are together as you have to start the process again. I've even slept in my living room to make sure they don't fight, the sleepless nights with the rumbling drove me mad...lol

Good luck with them, look forward to chatting!

Louise

As has been said above they are just sorting out who's boss. As long as there isn't any actual fighting, then leave them to get used to each other.

Watch out for sneaky bites marks on their backs though, as I had two brothers who were fine at first then one was biting and nipping the other one on his shoulders and back. He was long haired so I didn't realise at first! :o
