Hi,
On Sunday me and my boyfriend bought a pair of beautiful new guinea pig sows. We were told they were 8 weeks but I'm now starting to wonder if they really are, we weighed them for the first time today (until now we didn't want to disturb them too much) they weigh 271g and 236g. When checking the larger piggy over (we haven't quite decided on names yet) I noticed a raised mark under a layer of her hair. It was slightly white and dry. It felt like hard scar tissue. I will post a picture below. Does this look like an infection? Or is it an old injury of some sort?
Thanks so much
(The ginger pig is the one I'm concerned about , however she is more outgoing than the other and appears OK in herself)

Looking online it looks like mites or ringworm! Will she be ok? Can I wait til Thursday to take her to the good vet? Or should I take her to 'Vets4Pets' tomorrow evening?

It looks like a fungal skin rash to me- definitely worth being seen by the vet. Practice good hand-washing, as some fungal infections, like ringworm, can be spread between humans and animals and between the two pigs themselves.

I'd probably get her seen as soon as to be honest..

Thanks both, I thought it looked like ringworm :/
I'm in work til 6pm tomorrow but will try and get her to the pets4vets after (I know they open until 7), if I can't (I'm a nurse and often can't leave on time) I'm off on Thursday and will take them both in first thing. I've very carefully cleaned their cage and given them fresh everything and we're very hot on handwashing. She's eating well and not scratching. Poor piggy :( I should've known better than to trust p@h.

Don't worry I think everyone's made that mistake before...
Just keep an eye that they're eating and drinking normally until you can get them seen, preferably sooner than later.

Thank you! She is definitely eating well- a proper little greedy guts. Keeps stealing her sisters food! I'll keep a very close eye.

welcome to the forum :wel:

try having a read through these links... lots of helpful information in them.

Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

if you take both piggies to the vets, then they can both be checked & treated at the same time if it is fungal/ringworm, make sure you take your receipt (take a copy too) to prove you only bought the piggies recently & P@h should reimburse any treatments/veterinary bills too, (if you need any cleaning or disinfecting products (F10, etc) make sure they pay for those too.

i've not really had much experience of fungal issues, but i think it's usually either ivermectin injections and/or a topical wash type treatment - itrafungal that's sprayed on & left to dry, there's another oral treatment that sounds similar i just cant think of it at the moment ;(

oh... here are some of the names of treatments in this thread, (if it does turn out to be diagnosed by the vet)

Crusty And Irritating Ear...?

Helen105281 is very knowledgeable on skin problems. but yes a vet visit looks like its required i'm afraid.
oh & wooden houses/bridges etc will need thorough cleaning or disposal too, if you have fleeces or washable bedding it will need a hot wash to kill off the spores.

good luck & let us know how those little beauties get on :))

xx

Hi all,
Thanks for all the help, I took them to the vet today, and she said she wasn't really sure. It could be ringworm but she said it didn't look like classic ringworm to her. She also thought it might be an old injury. Nothing showed up under the light. She took a culture. She doesn't want to prescribe them anything unnecessarily as they're so little still. She said just to keep giving them lots of vitamin c rich food, monitor them and keep careful hand hygiene.
I'll try to ring p@h to get the money back for the visit but bot sure if they will without a positive diagnosis!
Thanks again.

Just keep an eye on it over the next few days, if it is Ringworm you will definitely notice a deterioration as it spreads quite quickly.

It hasn't got any worse in the last two days and the other pig is showing no sign. It's really hard to tell with their behavior because they're so new I don't know them well enough yet.

I forgot to say we have now named them!
Pippa (ginger)
Penny (Tricolour)

Quick update:
The vet rang us yesterday and said after discussing with a college she thought it probably was worth treating Pippa as a precaution for ringworm.
She prescribed Surolan topically for the wound (no other patches have appeared on either pig). We've cleaned the cage and binned all the wooden toys and are cleaning carefully through with antifungal daily.
However I am now a little concerned about the behavior between the pigs. I'm hoping it's just affection. Every time we've had Pippa out to give her the treatment Penny looks or sounds distressed, searching for her and pining. When Pippa goes back in though Penny is licking her all over very persistently. I know that licking is usually affection but she is so persistent and almost aggressive about it , even when Pippa is trying to get away she keeps doing it. To the point tonight that Pippa looks like she's had a bath! She's wet all over from being licked, and doesn't seem happy about it. Has anyone seen this?
