Hey I just have a question about my 7 month old male pig. I got him a few days ago and he seems like he is scared out of his mind. He will not come out of his house and freaks out if he hears any noises.

How long before he gets comfortable in his new home? Is there anything I can do to make him feel safer?

Congrats on your new addition :)

Every piggie is different and it takes time. Try sitting next to where he is hiding and talking gently to him. Gradually offer food and stroke him.

Does he have lots of places to hide so he feels secure?

Does he have a piggie friend?

Hey!

Ive had my lil guys for 3 months, one is so chilled out but the other is still scared and runs a lot when he hears noises. I'm sure someone will have loads better advice, but I never approach them from above - they think you are a predator and will instinctively run and hide. If you can have the cage raised, so noises from the floor dont scared them and so everything isn't way above them.

When i first got my boys i lay down by the cage so i was face level with them and spoke to them so they got used to my voice and me being around. I put a fleece blanket over the top of the cage too so they could have some chill time without looking around to see what was going on (they think if they cant see you, you cant see them lol).

But like I said, thats not a lot to go on, someone else will be along soon with better advice!

Good luck :) x

Well its is kind of complicated. I am in the process of building a c and c cage so he is only living in a cage that is about 3 foot by 1 and 1/2 feet. He has a little house to hide in. He refuses to eat food out of my hand, he only eats it when I step away.

I do not want to get him a friend until I have the cage finished. And finding a adoptable guinea pig in my area is tough. I told the rescue in my town to let me know if they have any new arrivals. But right now they have none. I do NOT want to buy from a large pet store chain. There pigs look unhealthy.

There is one privately owned shop which is where I got him. But he was the only pig they had. I may adopt a pig from my parents town. But I will not be going there until thanksgiving. So he may be alone until then :(

Can I assume you are based in th US? If so where abouts as some members may be able to offer some advice :)

A C&C cage is fantastic!

Great that you are planning to get him a friend....piggies are best in herds...I have two boys :))

Sounds like you are doing your best for him and a C&C cage is a great move.

While he is on his own and until he gets a friend, put a teddy in there with him. It will give him something to cuddle up to, and might make him feel a little bit more at ease. But make sure there are no lose parts or anything on it that he could ingest.

He will be nervous for a while, just take your time with him and he will be fine.

Hopefully someone can offer some advice as to rescues.

Does you piggie get out for exercise? If so make sure he has lots of places to hide....even a box with a hole cut in it so he can get it :)

I have two guinea pigs. I got them almost a year ago. When I first got them they were freaking out. But I let them out daily and held them for a little bit. Another guinea pig would be good also. They like to live with others so another one should keep it company and happy. Hope that helps :)p

Yes, where are you located? State? (there are quite a few of people on here from the US and so they would be able to help better if we at least knew the state you are in)

I live in a small town in missouri. It will take me a little bit to find the perfect pig because I am pretty picky about my pets.

So I put him on the floor in my living room with his house and a towel. Is it sitting in the house terrified so I put little pieces of spinach all around the outside so he has to walk around to find them. They he runs back in really fast. He is slowly getting better!

I believe there are two on here from around there! Post in the general chat and maybe they can help you? Post for rescues in missouri

Hi you're doing all the right things...... it takes time for some piggies :)
Another thing i like to do is have them on my lap, you could have a large towel under him and make like a pocket so he can hide in there...... talk quietly to him and offer little pieces of his fav treats. Try to do this daily :) or more often if you can. Every time you enter the room say his name and chat away.
Best of luck building your C&C cage :)
