I got a new baby pig last week. I noticed when I got her home that her left eye was weeping some goo (not the normal kind they secreat for cleaning themselves) and I thought she may have gotten some sawdust in it in the pet shop.

It's been a week and it's still seeping. I clean it with some sterile water and a cotton pad at night. It doesn't seem to be causing her discomfort, other than when the goo forms a little crust and she half closes her eye.

The eye itself looks fine, no scratches.
Should I be worried or will I wait to see if it passes?

I would get her eye checked by a vet if I were you . She may have a hay poke . If so, the vet can give you some eye drops .

I have an appointment booked for one of my pigs to be neutered friday, I'll bring her then if i cant get an appointment before then. Do you know if the drops are saline solution? because if so I have some of that and may be able to wash it out a little while I'm waiting

Your piggy needs attention before Friday I'm afraid. Eyes can very rapidly deteriorate if they are not treated promptly. If she has a hay poke her cornea will be becoming ulcerated. She may need corneal repair gel or antibiotic drops (veterinary not human) which only the vet can prescribe. She may have a blocked duct that the vet will need to treat - there are several possibilities. Please get her seen by a vet as soon as you are able to and certainly before Friday.
If she had this problem when you got her please speak to whoever you got her from. If it is a pet shop or a breeder they should be responsible for the costs of the treatment.

:agr: with the above comments.the sooner its looked at the less damage to the structure of the eye ,just to be on the safe side.please let the forum know how you get on.x

Friday will be 2 weeks after the eye injury which is far too long. Please have her seen today if possible as its already been a week.

All the best

I agree with all the above posters .

When it ''s happened to one of my guinea pigs, I've always had them seen within 24hours. If it hapoens in the week, I can go to my regular vet. If it happens at the Weekend, I ring around my local vets4 pets and get the next available routine appointment.

I didn't spot the problem until I had her home that night and was giving her a little check over for problems, so they may claim I let it happen on my time, which I know isn't true. I don't mind paying for her vet bills anyway!

Inspected the eye this morning. The eyeball is perfect, shiny and healthy looking, so it may be a blocked tear duct as @VikiA suggested.
If it is then that's a relief, I've had many pets over the years with that problem!

I'll report back asap :)

Please don 't forget - we're all saying it should be checked by a vet - sooner than your scheduled appointment on Friday

A scratch to the cornea will not show in normal light - the vet uses a fluorescent dye to highlight any tears or scratches. I've never been able to see one with the naked eye. Please get her seen by a vet as soon as possible and before Friday.

I agree with what everyone says above. Piggy eyes are very sensitive and its best to get them checked sooner rather than later, even if the eye seems fine today. I've had my fair share of eye injuries on piggies and they are not nice.

**UPDATE**

Lola has been the the vet :) she has a slight infection in her tear ducts, possibly from being in sawdust bedding. The vet said my saline washes helped prevent it from getting too bad and told me to keep them up for the next two weeks. So she's on a mild course of eyedrops for the week and is expected to make a full recovery :D

Thanks for letting us know how she got on. That's good to hear. Wishing Lola a speedy recovery.
