Hello, I'm a semi-new owner (meaning...when i was young i had a g.pig but i was young and didn't know much)

i'm older now, did my research, and now have 2 male guinea pigs.
one is 8-9 months old (rescue) the other male is 3-4 months old.

I just got them both, on Sunday, only having them less then 24 hours.

the baby (no name yet) just sits there, i can hold him, pet him, he just stays still.
I tried to feed him veggies, but he didnt seem interested in then, unlike the adult male.

i just want to know what 'normal" behavior?
there pretty chilled! i can hold them for a long time, there not hyper!
is this normal?

My guinea pigs were very placid when I got them from a rescue, exactly as you described actually! They would let you pick them up, stay completely still and let you stroke them but they didn't seem to enjoy any of this much. The longer I've had them the more confident (and active) they've become, and now I think they're enjoying the cuddling thing a lot more :)

They just need to get used to you, so talk to them, handle them often, and a few vegetables whilst you're doing that would be really appreciated by them I'm sure :))

My guess would be one of two things: either he's used to being handled and is very mellow (one of mine is a 'lap pig'- other than turning around or stretching her legs out, she is happy just to flop on my knee without going anywhere!) The second option that comes to mind is that he's NOT used to being handled and is scared, and is employing the 'stand really still and hope a predator overlooks me' technique. In that case, he may move around more and be more active as he gets his confidence up.

I do remember when my original pair of girls was young and not used to us yet, they would huddle together and stay perfectly still during floor time- obviously they were frightened. But as they got used to the situation they started venturing off their blanket and eventually got to love running around in their own special play area.

HTH a bit!

I have a cuddly boy & a hectic boy, he's probably used to being handled and likes cuddles! He'd let you know if he didn't like it x
