Was woken at 3am last night by cheeping noise. Not frantic sounding but not happy either. I couldn't see what was wrong. This morning they both did happy zoomies waiting for their veg, so I don't think either is in pain.
They wouldn't be warning about the snow coming? Or calling for the husboar they lost 2 months ago? Or maybe just bickering?

Chirping is just one of those unexplained and not at all well understood behaviours. I’ve only heard it a few times.

Thanks. Could you tell the age or sex of the chirpers you've heard?

As I keep mainly sows it’s no surprise that it was sows I heard! First time was indoors and one of my old ladies. No idea why she started and the others were all mesmerised listening to her. Second time was outside in the run. And it was my Holly. And again the others just stopped everything and listened to her. I suspected she’d seen a cat or a bird or something. But I couldn’t be sure,

Aw, cute the effect they had on the others.

Tallulah chirps quite a lot, after I made the mistake of clicking on a piggy chirping video on the forum when she could hear!
I dont think Tallulah has any clue what she is saying but it puts the main herd in the next door room on high alert! Tallulah likes to chirp at 3am when she can see the moon because she's a real weirdo, she still keeps telling me she's a guinea pig but... sometimes I dont quite believe her! Piggy daddy thinks she turns into a bat and flies about chirping at the moon when we aren't watching :)

Hi

If we knew what chirping actually means, we'd be very happy! It is still the biggest cavy mystery!
Here is what we know and don't know about it: Chirping

Chip my male 10 month old piggie was chirping last night at 3.30am. I woke up thinking I was hearing a dripping tap at first (our piggies are through the wall in the next bedroom from us, and we've very thick walls) so I got out of bed and realised the noise was coming from the piggie and hamster room. Pookie the dwarf hamster was running loudly in her wheel and had made it bump off the sides of the cage. I could hear someone chirping (hence the dripping sound, muffled through walls) slowly I opened the door but the culprit stopped. However Humpty was sitting staring into space looking shocked so I presumed it was chip doing the chirping. This time it may have been an alert warning.

Amazing the noise got through the wall. It seems so common to be around 3 in the morning. I wonder if guinea pigs allocate sentry duty at night.
