YOUR EXPERIENCE WANTED!

Would you like to write one of the following new information threads to make our forum an even better place to find good information?

  • Recommended UK pellet and hay brands (helen105281)
  • Recommended US pellet and hay brands (roger & piglet)
  • Recommended Australian pellet and hay brands (Cavyhappy)
We would like members from each continent who have researched their local market to please put their knowledge to all our profit! These three new threads are going to replace the brand threads at the top of the food section to make it easier for our various new members from all over the world to source good quality pellet and hay products.

  • Pellets vs dry mix/muesli (GuineaPiggie) - done
A short information thread listing the reasons why mueslis and dry mixes are no longer recommended.

  • Guinea pig treats (Claire W)
A short guide to suitable and unsuitable guinea pig treats. Ideally with some pictures or links.
  • Children and guinea pigs
For our newbie/wannabe section, we would like a mum with practical experience to discuss the joys and challenges that need to be considered when thinking about acquiring guinea pigs as family pets. Should include the thorny issues of "learning responsibility" and "biting". Pictures and practical tips welcome!
  • Cage guide (Nicola_)
Again for the newbie/wannabe section as well as the housing section, a short guide of minimal and recommended cages sizes for a varying number of guinea pigs as well as a short picture guide to various forms of cages and hutches, including strict no-nos.
  • Guinea pig leashes (Claire W)
There are still shops out there that sell ferret leashes for guinea pigs and we get the odd newbie who thinks this is a good idea. Just a short information thread about why not!
  • Why rescue?
A short thread listing the pros of going recommended rescue by one of our knowledgeable rescue friendly members.
I am in the process of compiling a list of good standard rescues in English speaking countries around the world, which should be ready in a few weeks; checking out every single rescue is a rather slow and time consuming process! The link can be included in the thread.
  • Boar problems and care (Pebbles)
Please post on here if you are interested in creating one of these new sticky threads. I will contact you to discuss the various aspects that should be addressed/included.

I was just thinking the other day how useful it'd be to have a sticky specifically about cages as I was trying to find some information for a friend and struggled a little. I'd be happy to take on that thread depending on time frames as it would maybe take me a while to get it just right.

I can write something up about US food :)
Thanks, that would be great! I was hoping that you would! Could you please include links to online sites as well?

I would offer to do the UK pellet one, but the pellets I feed and recommend are German though they can be bought from Zooplus.
That would be great; as long as the pellets are available in the UK. This is to be a guide for new members to judge for themselves what they want to feed and where to strike the balance between quality and cost. If you could include sites where to get pellets and hay from online, that would be great.

Ok will do, shall I include the protein and calcium ratios etc? and any debatable ingredients? I have been putting together a spreadsheet anyway so have the basics.

As long as you could please also include a rating in the spread sheet that gives newbies a handle on whether a product is low, medium, high or excellent quality at a glance!

Any more members who'd like to contribute?

I'm already doing some stuff on beddings but could be tempted into something else too :-)

Feel free - there are some pretty quick-to-do threads on the list as well!

I wouldn't mind doing the children and guinea pigs thread, I am not a mother so i have never experienced it, but feel very strongly about "guineas pigs being ideal pets for children"

I have grown up with guinea pigs myself and my (and my sister's) love stems from that time; but I also have got very vivid memories over regular squabbles over the clean-out and green forage collecting, especially when I ended up doing my brother's week yet again! My sister and I have both come back to having piggies as adults.

I don't want it to be a total "anti" thread, but one that deals sensitively and in an insightful way with the inherent issues and long term responsibilies for the parents. We have got a fair number of forum piggies that are family pets in a good way.

I can do the shop brought treats and / or the harnesses thread?

You are welcome to do both! They don't need to be long, especially not the Leash one. The treats you can divide into yes, yes and no,nos! If you need to incorporate links and pictures, Falken has offered his help!

When we have written the thread, do we write it on a thread in the forum or send you a copy of it first? Also, is there a deadline for when this needs to be done by?

Please send me a draft first so we can discuss any potential problems, changes or typos first. One of us mods should also be present in order to sticky the thread as soon as you have posted the final version.

Hi Wiebke

I will do a thread on looking after your boars bits..with photos of the various conditions such as impaction, frilly willy etc etc..seems like we need one!

It may take some time however as I will need to co-erce an unsuspecting friend to enable me to take the piccies!
