Hiya, as it is getting colder I am making a large indoor hutch for my guinea pigs. It will go in a disused cow shed (I will need to keep out the swallows, mice and the cat) is the any wood or construction materials I need to use or avoid? Do you have any tips?

I don't have tips or anything but I know pine can be dangerous unless it is kiln dried

No special tips from me as I’ve never built one. Just be sure to go for predator proof mesh rather than just chicken wire on the front as it’s stronger and therefore safer for your piggies. And on the floor I’d put Lino to help protect against urine seeping into the wood.

Would corrugated plastic be ok?

I can’t really imagine it could be used anywhere to be honest.

You need a hardwood frame with a solid back, floor and roof and mesh inserts on the front to allow light and ventilation.

The piggies need a flat flooring. Corrugated plastic on the floor would result in mountaineering efforts for them through rivers of wee that would pool in the dips.....
