Hi all,

We have two pigs, Bert and Wilbur and we'd like to build them a new home now our house has been refurbished. They are currently in a rather large cage but it's a bit of an eyesore (think massive, sage green, on large hairpin legs, in the middle of our living room)!

Their existing cage offers a main living area of around 70cm x 200cm with a smaller ledge where they can get water etc. We are thinking of building them a new environment in one of our alcoves however we're worried that they're not going to have the space as before. The alcoves are around 40cm deep by 110cm.

Would it be suitable to have a tiered solution and connect the 'floors' with ramps (making sure to not make them too steep). What are people's thoughts on this? Happy to listen to any ideas and opinions you guys may have. We have heard that multiple floors shouldn't be taken into consideration when regarding the overall floor area so there is this to consider too.

Thanks very much for any help.

I am afraid that would not be big enough. Guinea pigs are ground roaming, some are scared of heights and they are not natural climbers. Their cage needs to meet size requirements on a single level. Upper levels are bonus space but they do not increase the single level floor space so do not count towards cage size.
110cm x 40cm does not meet RSPCA welfare standards - the minimum two piggies should be kept in is 120cm x 60cm but for two boars a larger space is necessary to stop them having territorial issues and falling out. If you were to decrease their cage size so dramatically there is a chance you could run into problems with them. We recommend a minimum of 150cm x 60cm for two boys.

I’ve linked in our cage size guide below
