Hi, my son was given a female guinea pig for his birthday by his grandparents. We went straight back bought another girl from the same litter so that she wasn't alone.

Anyway, we now have the problem of housing. The house we were given was fine for one but would be too small for two. The guinea pigs will be kept indoors over winter at least so we need an indoor home for them that is going to give them enough space. We've got an indoor/outdoor pen for them already.

Any advice would be great ... these are the first guinea pigs we've ever had.

Thanks :-)

Firstly welcome to the forum. You have found the right place for all things piggy related. We dont want to bombard you with too much advice right away but it might be a good idea for you to start another thread in the introductions section so we can all say hello. It would also be a good idea to edit your profile to include where you live as we have members all over the world who can give you area specific advice.

We have included this link for you to have a look at in relation to cage sizes. It's quite good except ignore the size for one piggy as piggies should not be kept as single animals but as we can see you have done the right thing in getting a companion for your sons little girl.

http://www.guineapigcages.com/ but remember the bigger the cage the better

There is loads of great advice threads on this forum including bedding, food, behaviour, etc - just have a look and you'll find what you're looking for and dont be afraid to ask as there is always someone with the right answers on here.

Lisa & Ali..x

PS We all absolutely love piggy pigtures so get your camera out and give us some pigtures of your girls:))

C&c cages are good and can be cheap if you do them yourself or you could extend your cage by adding a run. Will you need it covered

I've had a look at C&C Cages, thanks for the link. It's a bit confusing (I'm easily confused). I'd like a loft in the cage to give the girls some extra room but also to give us extra room ... our house isn't the biggest! The loft cages don't look as though they are covered.

Hello and welcome :) What was the cage/hutch that you were given - if you posted a photo or its name/dimensions people here might be able to give you ideas of how to extend it cheaply and quickly. I have seen people connecting two small cages with tubes etc and I have attached our metal hexagonal playpen/run to our Ferplast 100 cage (with a ramp so they can get in an out) in the past to extend housing.

Hi :)
I have never owned a C&C cage myself (but plan on doing so). They can easily be modified to suit your needs.
Most are displayed uncovered, but with a few extra grids and cable ties, you are able to make a roof for it very easily.

Hi Goth Mummy ... at the moment the girls are in a similar cage to this one: http://www.petsathome.com/shop/cavie-80-guinea-pig-cage-by-ferplast-15980 - I think it's far too small though. We put a metal run around the cage and rigged up a wee ramp but it's not idea as our cat is very interested! I've seen a cage on Ebay which is similar dimensions to the cage we have but double, as in one on top of the other. It looks perfect for the space that we have but I'm just not sure if guinea pigs are keen on running up and down a ramp?

The 80cm ferplast cage is tiny not sure why it still exists myself. Piggies are very hit and miss with ramps so its best to get something with lots of space on one level. The ferplast 120cm cage is the minimum for 2 pigs and is often on offer online. I have a 120 for my pair on a stand and its great. If you can fit it in the 140cm ferplast cage is good but expensive. zooplus is a great site for cage deals.

My 120

I've just joined 2 cages together by clipping the two flaps together. I've not had to cut any wire or attach tubes. It has given me a long cage the length of a single bed. I had a wee ramp for them to get between the two areas but they didn't use it and would rather leap over the middle divide! I'm still toying with getting a c&c as they are more attractive to look at !

That is a really good idea mamaguinea pig - I am hoping to do something similar with my Ferplast 100 - I often see them secondhand on gumtree and I really like the idea of sticking two together to make one huge cage :)

Gingergnome - could you look on gumtree for a 120 cm cage? or connect two together in a row using your old 80cm cage? I guess it depends on what space you have. I bet the grandparents who bought the piggie had no idea what they had started!

Goth Mummy - it was actually really easy to attach them. I've changed it a little bit from this picture. It have put it on the floor as it needed a totally flat surface and I've attached the cages together with the plastic tag things people use to secure things ( can't remember what they are called ) . It makes the whole cage lift off in one whole piece for cleaning rather than trying to balance it in place. As I said though the c&c cages look more attractive than my cobbled together cage but it is doing its job and the guineas have lots of space to pop corn about like silly fluff balls ! I'm definitely going to work on its appearance !

Thank you for your help ... I really appreciate it. I'm glad I didn't go ahead and get a double cage for the girls. I've now bought a 120 which we should get on Monday. The girls spend a fair amount of time in their pen every day so that'll be fine for them. Space is always an issue!

You're right ... I don't think my parents had a clue what they were starting ;-)
