Hiya,

We took home our wee baby last weekend and have called him Arnie. He's a Rex and about 3 months old.

We have modified a large dog crate as his cage which give him loads of space to run about...but all this running about is making a mess as whenever he is on the move, he kicks out a trail of sawdust outside the bars along with the occassional poop.

I was looking at buying clear correx sheets to put around the outside of the tray that would be a few inches in height to stop the flyaway sawdust.

Any ideas?

Ta,

Lynda & Arnie

Sorry, I haven't seen you on here before :) Is he going to have a friend?

How big would you say the cage is? You could make a homemade cage or a c&c. I'd put correx up for the moment.

I used to be on the forum years ago when I had my rex, Ron but fell away when he passed.

The cage is 92cm by 60cm and we are undecided about a friend just now. He's going to the vet tonight for a check up as he has a crusty nose and a wee sniffle.

Where in the UK would I buy the grids and connectors? Or can I buy everything I need in a pack?

Thanks,

Lynda

I'm sorry to hear about that, RIP Ron.

I'd really advise making it bigger to be honest. And seeing as he's still fairly young, it would be easier to neuter him now rather than when he gets older. If you'd rather skip the risk of surgery, you could do boar dating, but I'm not sure about when the hormones kick in to dominate, something like that. With boars, the cage will have to be bigger (if using C&C, two girls or girl and neutered boy = 2x4 minimum, and two boars = 2x6 minimum from what I remember). You could do a hunt for a spayed girl, but they're more, for lack of a better word, rarer than neutered males. I hope his vet appointment goes well too :)

Mind me asking what your price limit is? This site has the correx made to fit and everything else should come along with it. If you want to assemble it yourself, I'd be happy to give some links.

The crate is definitely a better alternative to some store bought cages, but I would also get a C&C, especially when he gets bigger and if he gets a friend (and without meaning to sound blunt or rude, he should definitely have a friend, as I believe it's cruel to keep them on their own, but that's a different discussion all together)
Correx would work to keep the mess inside the crate, if that's the way you want to go. I did the same with my rat cage. Made some correx walls all around the sides to stop them from kicking stuff out. Or you could make a correx tray to fit inside the crate? You can buy complete C&C set ups, but it will be more pricy. Depends how much work you want to do yourself. Correx should be easy to get from a local sign maker and relatively cheap. Grids tend to be harder to find and more expensive. You can get the plastic variety easier and cheaper though. Not everyone seems to like them as the pigs can't look out of the side, but I think they are definitely a good, cheap alternative if you can't get anything else. I got mine from Argos. Hope that helps...
