Hi I’m a newbie on here.
We have bought 2 guinea pig baby boys from a fabulous pet shop. They are a surprise for our daughter. The pet shop owner (who also bred the guinea pigs) has rung me and said that other babies in the cage have ring worm but our babies are not showing it. She has offered our money back, different guinea pigs or we can wait for 2 weeks while she treats and quarantines them. My first thought was to wait for their quarantine to finish and take them home as I have already bonded with them as they are so cute! The pet shop owner said that ring worm once treated does not return but it is highly infectious. What do other members think? I do want them
For our daughter but am worried about the risk of re- infection after they have been treated. They are gorgeous and it is a highly reputable pet shop. Thanks for any advice

The pet shop isn't so good on their knowledge by the sounds of it. I have experience of a ringworm outbreak in June 2016 and then Donald came down with it again in January 2017 and it was particularly persistent (took me quite a while to get rid of it). You need to have a good read through our ringworm guide if you are to take the piggies on to ensure that you are able to reduce the risk of reinfection and to prevent the infection being spread to your family.

Hi!

The interval between infection and outbreak is 10-14 days. If you bathe your piggies with a fungicidal dip or shampoo during that time you can prevent an outbreak and also make sure that no spores are left in the coat.

Please deep clean the whole cage as to per our hygiene tips.

Here are our ringworm hygiene tips. We worked out nearly all angles over the last dozen years or so, so you should find them very helpful.
Please speak with the shop lady how she treats her piggies. At least full marks on her to warn you and to offer treatment.
