Hi- we rescued 2 Guineas from SSPCA yesterday. So far they have settled really well- eating and drinking and enjoying laptime. Still a bit shy in their cage. They are 2 females. We are still trying to work them out but today one started what can only be described as growling. Mostly at the other one (they came as a pair) but also randomly when it's in its house. There was spinach about at the time this started. Should I be worried about this?

Also we need to get them an indoor playpen. Any recommendations. I'd quite like one with a base to avoid any pee accidents (we've got puppy pads) and something not too expensive. We seem to have spent a fortune already and I can see how this would get out of hand!

:wel: to the forum . I'm afraid it can cost quite a bit to get your set up how you and your guinea pigs like it .

I suggest you have a look at the threads in this link ..

" Starter Kit" Of Information Threads For New Owners

Which includes a thread on bedding ...

Bedding For Guinea Pigs - Overview

and a thread explaining rumbling ..

Sow Behaviour

Ah- thanks. I've had a good look already but missed the thread about the sow behaviour. They have been scuffling too so that maybe explains things.

You can start a thread in the behaviour section of the forum if you like - this will get picked up by one of our behaviour experts.

It's probably just rumble strutting? I know my girls do it quite a bit, especially when around food with the other guinea pigs. It's just a hierarchy territorial thing so it's nothing to worry about. They're just basically trying to sort out who's "boss" in this new environment. However if you continue to have problems with the food I.e. one guinea pig won't let the other eat. I'd get them 2 of everything so you can separate the pellets into 2 areas of their cage, their water bottles and hay and veggies if need be, as this can sometimes happen. But it's only early days yet :)

When we got our sows it took about 2 weeks for the behaviour to settle down as they worked out who was dominant. I think they re establish dominance when put in a new environment. Hopefully yours will settle soon.
