I have a female guinea pig for my 6th grade classroom. I am the only one allowed to open her cage and pet her for now. She is starting to squeak when kids sit down to do their work. As soon as the look back at her she hides and stops. Then when the kids go back to work, she does it again. Is this her hide and seek? And is it normal? When I come into the room in the morning she squeaks but doesn't hide. I am just wondering if this is a normal behavior. Any advice is needed!

Sounds pretty much like it! Some piggies are more confident that others - I have three out of four who will quite happily sit and watch you! She sounds like she is playing games with the children too. Once she gets used to her surroundings, she'll probably chatter away. However, despite lots of human attention, piggies do like company of their own kind so could she get a friend? They would need housing of 4' x 2' minimum.

Hi and welcome to the forum, i'm from Australia (aka OZ) and have found this forum full of lovely people and great advice on piggies and yes even personal things as well, everyone here is family :)
Your piggie sounds like a very social one tho a little shy which is totally normal, i think she must enjoy your company, obviously she's saying 'hello' when you first get in, i suppose that's when she gets fed also. And then when the kids are there and they go quiet perhaps she's saying, come say hello to me :)) but then she gets scared awww
Good idea tho about being careful who handles her.
Any other questions please post, as we've got lots of people who've also experienced the 'class piggie' and i'm sure will help you.
Looking forward to hearing all about her, what's her name and do we get to see a pigture? x)

Agree with all that's been said, definitely your piggie would benefit from a friend of her own. She will soon get used to her surroundings and comings and goings of everyone. What happens at weekends and half terms with your piggie? x

Yes, especially as she is a 'classroom' Piggy. All those children, though very loving and caring I'm sure, may be a little intimidating for her. She would love to have a little friend to share the fun with! x

I'd get her a little friend of her own kind. She'll be much more content. Just make sure it's the same sex!
