Hi All,

I sadly lost one of my guinea pigs last month and have one piggy left. I thought he would be OK on his own as he was still talking and pop corning. However 5 weeks later he has become quiet and not talking as much. We have decided to get him a little friend. However i am worried he wont get on with them. He lives outside and i feel sorry for him being all alone whilst i'm at work all day. I have lots of questions should i get one older or younger, male or female. Also how long does it take to bond them from a separate litter. I am going to go to and RSPCA center and see if they can help me bond my guinea pig an I've never done this before.
If they don't get on i have little room for another 4x2 cage outdoors.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Hi! I am very sorry for your loss.

Most RSPCA branches unfortunately don't offer boar dating at the rescue; a few branches offer speed dating with baby boars.
We have got a good standard rescue locator on the top bar that can help you find further rescues that may be able to help you with boar dating/bonding at the rescue. Your closest would be Rainbow Rescue in Southport. Best of luck!

Thank you Wiebke i will take a look at that..

In anyone's experience when bonding with a 1.5 year boar is it generally successful?

I watch a you tube subscription squeak dreams and they make it look easy!

Boars of any age can be rebonded, as long as they can choose who they want to get on with. That can take 1-3 dates on average. some boars can take even longer to match, but the vast majority can be rebonded, especially those boars that have been living in a happy boar bond. It is worth ringing up all the rescues you can get to. Please be aware that the vast majority of rescues (including the RSPCA) are entirely volunteer run, so may not be able to come back to you asap.

Alternatively, your boy is still a very good age for being neutered by a vet that is either very experienced with guinea pig neutering or that an exotics specialist with practice in operating on small furries. Finding the right vet is the crucial bit in order to minimise the risk of especially post op complications.
You have to include a full weeks post op wait until a boar is 100% safe to join sows, but it may be a consideration if you struggle with finding a boarmate and if your boy had the option of living alongside a sow or two with interaction through the bars until he is ready to be bonded. I have the baby from a supposedly safe over 5 weeks post op boar (not one of mine) just to prove that point. https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/guinea-pig-vet-locator/

Good luck with your new piggie! As long as you get the right personalities they should be ok and it probably won't take too long.

We are a 'boars only' family so have been through a few boar dates now with all sorts of ages and personalities. Hope the rescue can help out and you can find a new companion. I am sure it will lift the spirits of your lonely pig. Let us know how it goes!

Really excited for next Saturday now. I think i'm more exited than him

I just hope I've not left him on his own for too long.:)

Unsuccessful bonding session :soz: we tried three different boars and it ended in a fight..

So he is booked in to get him pompoms removed.

We should have more choice i.e. boar or sow.
