New Born Pup
Hi everyone,
My first post on here wasn't a happy one as some of you know. Following on from the loss of our little brown piggy our other little pig needs a new companion. Bertie is going to choose a new friend this weekend and to help the bonding process when the two pigs come back (unless he doesn't get on with anyone which is completely foreseeable) I'm building a new, larger home for the two of them.
We currently use a Furplast 140 and it's been a good starter cage but it is a massive pain in the behind to clean out. We have to crouch down to wipe it all down and it's just not practical.
I saw a great guide posted on the forum for this cage Building a corner DIY C and C style guinea pig cage with a Perspex front | Craft me Happy!: Building a corner DIY C and C style guinea pig cage with a Perspex front
I love the open front to this with the perspex and I'd look to make it a good 2m wide. Overall depth would be around 700mm and it would be rectangular in design so that it would sit against one of the walls. From what I've read this should be ample space for two piggies.
My main concerns are with the materials. I am thinking 3/4" (18mm) plywood painted with Johnstones Garden Colours. The base will be covered in a 3mm vinyl for easy cleaning and to protect the wood. What would you guys suggest to stop wee getting down by the edges of the vinyl? Could I run a very fine bead of silicone down the edges or is this a bad idea?
The front will consist of two panels of 5mm perspex which will slot into U shaped channels for easy access. The height I'd like to make around 40cm to stop them from thinking about jumping. I could always add a hinged lid at a later date. The whole cage would be raised off the floor and sit on a timber frame with casters.
What do you guys think? Thank you in advance to any advice offered.
Many thanks
David
