I’m having a new carpet fitted in my sitting room/dining room where my piggies live with me. I’m moving them to a different room whilst this happens. Can I move them straight back or should I leave them in the other room for a few days/ weeks?
Any advice would be very welcome 😊

I think it depends on what your new carpet is made of- eg all natural wool fibres with a natural jute/hessian backing, then natural wool underlay, non toxic adhesives, they shouldn't cause any problems. Any synthetics, eg polypropylene, polyurethanes and solvent based adhesives would emit fumes that are not great for animals (or humans for that matter). Reports differ as to how long these fumes are released-
I looked into this myself for my own health, after taking advice from my consultant & before I had the piggies- it's a minefield!

It's good that you can move your piggies out of the way. I think if it smells different to you then they will definitely be able to smell it too so it might be better to err on the side of caution.

Thank you LollyJJ I am sensitive to smells so I’ll be cautious - I have said no adhesives (and I rejected vinyl and laminate on that basis as a scree needed to put down first !) they’ll be happy and comfortable in their new room, and if they have to stay there for a while …. well it’ll be ok.

I had a new carpet a little while ago and I really hated the new smell. It did take a few weeks to go. I am a bit sensitive to smells.

New carpet in place - no smell and I requested no glue ! I’ve had my french doors open all day yesterday but I’ve bought an air purifier that removes VOCs , chemicals etc. I think I’ll keep the piggies out of the room for 2 wks and then see how it is. Piggies are very happy …..as long as plenty of hay and tea time veg they’re fine. I have noticed they’re very vocal when I go to the fridge 😂
