Hello all
We have had a great week at Kidsgrove cavie land ! :(|):(|)
Our new cages are great and Oliver and Cindy have moved in and Dylan and Peanut have moved about too.
Up to now Dylan and Peanut have lived on on the bottom of my stack so we have to bend down to feed etc..get the picture. They are birth gorgeous brothers nearly 5 months and get along great they have always been bit timid and wont really venture out of the cosy hole much but are fine when picked up.
Anyway we have move them higher up now so we can get to the easier, and over last few days we have noticed they are more daring and will actually come out for food ! and be in the actual open part of the cage when we are in the garage feeding/cleaning etc.We havent handled them too much and just wondered if they are more confident now they are more at eye level with us and not having big humans stoop over them ? ?
Dylan actually sat by his bowl this morning when i put dried food in.
Has anyone noticed anything similar ? :)

Birds of prey are one of the main killers of wild guinea pigs, and that instinct sits very deep - they do not like being stooped over, but feel a lot freer to interact when you meet on eye level.

You can actually do "piggy body speech" with them. A good way to show that you have no designs on them other than companionship is to imitate a piggy wash with your hands "washing" your face and hair and you then sitting still and looking at them out of the corner of your eye. If you get a piggy to then answer by washing, you have success! :))

How interesting must try that, hope no one is watching though,.my family already think I am eccentric.

Oooh I really must try that ;) - my OH already thinks I am mad for lying with them during floor time so they can climb on me!

does that actually work wiebke? my girls are the same if i sit next to the cage they come out and talk to me if i am standing they run off and hide

Hm, interesting with that bird of prey thing... What do you think, is it better to have a smaller (but still big enough obviously)cage up on a table or a bigger cage on the floor? My lot are quite scared, maybe being higher up would help? I will try it!

I will also try the grooming thing (when noone is around to laugh at me ;))

Well we had clean out time and classic FM on today.I sat level with Daisy and Peaches cage pretending to have a groom..funny.
They kept glancing at one another as if to say what is she doing it was comical.I gave them a strand of hay each they both sat still eating whilst i was there its as if we were having social time and i was included in their snack time.
I love giving them hay its always like they have never seen it before and they dive in nibbling away.xx>>>
