I have two questions. I just adopted two brothers yesterday and they are pretty scared of me. I know it's normal and that it takes time but I just want to know how long to expect it to take? They will approach my hand and sniff and take food from me but if I try to touch them they will bolt. Also, my second question, I have a ramp in my cage. I've been trying to get them used to it. One, the smaller brother, had gone up and down a few times with some motivation from treats. So I'm not so worried about him, but the larger brother won't put his back feet on the ramp. He'll just stretch to reach the treats. Do any of you have any tips to help him be less fearful of the ramp? Thanks!

Hi Maddie,

I kept my ramp closed until the piggies were used to me and the top part of their cage, then gradually introduced the ramp. You can also by tubey tubes that you can attach to the ramps to make a little tunnel for them, this can give them a bit more confidence.

I'm no expert but it's good that they're already taking food off you! Mine took a few days before they did that so all piggies differ in how much confidence they have. Lots of patience and food and you'll soon earn their trust, it's lovely watching their progress :-). This forum has helped me loads since I got my boys so have a good read through some of the threads.
As for ramps, I know some people have snuggly tunnels on their ramps to help make them feel more secure.
Don't forget to post photos when they have settled in a bit more! ;)

Give your boys time!

They are doing fine for being so new. It can take a few days for a piggy to crack the ramp. You may want to think about providing something that gives good grip on the ramp. I am using an offcut of neighbours' old carpet which I stick down with double sided tape and change regularly; it also cuts down on the potential for accidents.

We also have got a guide on how to best pick up guinea pigs in the tutorial videos section on the top bar.
You can find a lot of information at the top of each of the Care sections, but you are welcome to ask any questions you may have!

Wow they are stunning! Thanks for posting their pigtures

They are so lovely! I have two new girl piggies who are super shy too. I've had them a few weeks and they are beginning to gain a little confidence with me which is really rewarding to see. It does take time. Best of luck :)

Update! We put a side and cover on the ramp as some of you guys suggested and the boys have now mastered the ramp and are going up and down with no problem! And they are getting a little more confidence. Doc let me pet him this morning :)
