I have 4 new born pups, one has cloudly bluey/grey eyes and squints when eating. Otherwise he/she is healthy - moving, eating solids, feeding from mum etc. I’m waiting a call back from the vets this morning...does any one have any ideas if it requires urgent attention, what it might be & what the treatment/prognosis is? (have attached a pic of piggie on the right) and if a vet visit will I need to take the pup (now 4 days old) with mum and other pup with me? thanks

Hi!

Entropion (inwards turned eyelid with their tiny lashes scratching the surface of the eye and causing ulceration/infection) are not at all uncommon in newborns but can be easily corrected by a vet if the issue is dealt with as soon as you can see a vet during during day times. if left untreated, it can eventually cause permanent scarring on the surface of the eye.
It is not an out-of-hours emergency but should be ideally treated within 24 hours or as soon as you can see a vet.
Guinea Lynx :: Eyes

In rare cases babies can be born with congenital cataracts. There is unfortunately nothing that can be done about that.

Thank you! Just waiting to get a vet appointment... should I take pup & her mum & their sibling with me? it’s only 4 days old so thought best not to separate them

Yes, please take the whole family and ask the vet for a quick check-up of mum and the other pups if they are willing to.

Aw, poor little mite, hope you can get your little piggie sorted and better soon x

Let us know how you get on. The whole little piggy family need to go with you.

Hello and thanks for all your messages. The vet agreed it is juvenile keraritis - caused by eye being irritated by amino fluid in the womb (eye lid and lashes are fine) and cloudly only on surface on the eye. He has given chloramphenicol so hopefully that will help. The pup (a boy) is otherwise fine and very cute!

Thanks for the update.
Hope the meds work quickly.
Glad it’s nothing serious.
It would be lovely to see pictures of the babies

Good that it is just an infection and no further damage. All the best with the chloramphenicol.

I find that chloramphenicol tends to dry out the eye quite noticeably, plain artificial tear gel (preferably to plain tear drops) from a pharmacy will help with the rehydration and comfort in the eye. it also helps to speed up the healing process if you apply it three times daily about half to one hour after the chloramphenicol in order to allow the antibiotic eye drops or gel to be fully absorbed first.

How did you come by your babies? they are all very cute indeed!

The mother in your picture looks like a peru to me, though. I have and have had several perus, shelties and coronets over the years.
