Hi all,

So sadly our gorgeous little Peanut crossed the rainbow bridge a week ago due to a very unexpected illness. Now our lovely Fuzz is left alone. My boys have been living side by side in c&c cages for quite a while now as, long story short, their bond was broken during their hormonal stages. Fuzz is very dominant and was aggressive with Peanut. They had multiple fights and the one that prompted their permanent split drew some blood. However, since then they have lived very happily side by side. They interacted well and were both very happy and active. Fuzz is 2 and a half now and I don’t want him to be alone. As he has not lived directly with another pig for a while now, and has a history of aggression, I am worried about the next step for him. I don’t want him to have a split cage again. I would love for him to have a successful bond and live happily with another pig, but I am so nervous about what to do next. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you x

Hi and welcome!

I am very sorry for your loss! Boars stay bonded even through the bars. :(

Unfortunately this is a very tough time for bereaved guinea pigs as pretty much all rescues have ceased dating and adoptions for social distancing reasons; pets shops can continue to provide food but not sundries and neutering operations to enable your boy to live with a younger sow (which is generally the most stable of bonds) after a 6 weeks post-op safety wait are classed as non-essential for reduced service vet clinics.

Here is information on companionship for single boars and tips on how you can look after your boy for the time being until getting a companion is a possibility again.

Thank you very kindly. It is going to to be tough but we’ll just have to give him as much time and enrichment as possible until we are able to take the necessary steps safely, to find him a friend. Thank you for your help!☺️

How far are you from Leicester?

It is sadly. Tough times at the moment!

Yeah! I totally feel for you!

I've missed out on a planned adoption by a matter of just 3 days when lockdown was suddenly announced. I has meant that I had to split up a mother and daughter pair, which I had promised not to do, in order to have company for recently adopted neutered boar whose intended bride had bowed out and another sow had not worked out with him. But this is an unforeseeable situation...
I am lucky enough to be able to find an internal solution while I am waiting for a socially distanced adoption handover to be able to go ahead at some point.

Oh what a shame! All that matters is that you are doing your best for the piggies. Hopefully this situation is resolved soon but either way, we have to keep ourselves safe!
