Hi all,

Bill & Eric have been unusually squabbly with each other today. Admittedly, these are our first guinea pigs, and we've only had them a week (as of yesterday) but they've been squeaking at each other today a great deal more than is usual. They're also burrowing under the hay which is not unheard of, but hasn't been overly common either.

Just wondering at what point I should be stepping in and doing something...

How old are your boys? They start getting full on hormones at 8 weeks that can last up to 14 months so there will be a lot of dominance going on until they figure out who is going to be the boss and who is going to be the under pig.

What kind of squeaking is it? It could be happy little squeaks and they are just talking or it could mean something different if it is a different noise.

What size cage are they in? The minimum for two boars is 4ft x 2ft they need plenty of room to get away from each other if they want because if they're cramped in a little space with no room to move that will increase the chance of a fight since they can't get away from each other.

Burrowing under the hay isn't entirely common but it doesn't mean anything bad either they are just trying to get comfy and warm :)

Don't separate unless blood is drawn. Piggy arguments look WAY WORSE than they actually are. Sounds to me like they are just trying to sort out their dominance issues and if you separate them before necessary you may not be able to put them back together. My boys rumbled and chased and nipped and on and on for three weeks. They are finally calming down. Some piggies it takes a few days to fall in love and others could take weeks. Every pig has a different personality and like humans some personalities hit it off together and some clash. Good luck with your boys and keep us updated!

And another thing. WELCOME TO THE FORUM!

Eric is approx 9 weeks, Bill is approx 10-12 months. Both are rescue piggies, so impossible to pinpoint with certainty.

It ranges from soft 'communicative'-sounding squeaks to high-pitched, sharp shrieks. This is often accompanied by one of them dashing in the opposite direction (away from the troublesome noises).

They are in a 4x2 C&C cage with oodles of room. There is 1x plastic pigloo which they tend to either share or fight over, 1x wooden "stick arch", and 1x edible "tiki hut"...so they ought to have ample opportunity to escape each other.

Good to know!

Again, good to know. Thank you. And will keep you posted, of course!

Thanks!

Sounds like they are both going through their puberty stages and are going to keep at it for maybe some time. Doesn't sound like anything to serious. I would put two of everything in the cage for them (one for each=less to fight over since they can have their own) Cage size is fantastic though! My two boys have a 4ft by 2ft and love it! My youngest boar Fez just hit his 8 week mark and they have been nosing off but no chattering (they are quiet piggies) Sweets is about 5-6 months and rumbles at Fez quite a bit but Fez usually ignores it.

Bill and Eric - I wonder if you are a True Blood fan :))
My Mrs (user name Aranel) is quite the True Blood fan.

Good to hear. We're keeping an eye on them and it doesn't seem to be coming to much other than occasional shouting at each other. And to be honest, Eric brings a lot of it on himself as he tends to like to dive into the pigloo or tikki hut exactly when big Bill has decided to have a nap! Silly boy.

LOL Yep, Eric being about 9 weeks is just entering his hormonal phase so that's to be expected. Fez keeps doing the same. Can't wait to see pigtures of your boys! Are you from the UK or the US? Just curious.

There are a couple of pics up already! Will take more soon!

I'm from the US but live in the UK. Is the yankee accent showing through in my text?

No lol do I have a yankee accent? YIKES! I was just wondering because you are on in the middle of my day Idaho time in the US is why I was curious. Most UK members get on here around 9-10p.m.

Haha. Oh I see. I'm originally from MI, myself.

Sounds quite normal. Don't worry, as I've said before if there's no serious nashing of teeth they should be okay. Two of everything for boars who start squabbling is always a good idea. Wallace and Mr M were always squabbling, even over the water bottle and mineral blocks so I had to replicate everything! Hoping things will be a bit quieter with Wallace and Rocket as I think Wally sees himself as a bit of a father-figure now! Good luck with your two.:)

Thank you! It's early hours yet, but they seem better today already! (he says as they start squawking at each other)

Thanks again to everyone. The boys seem to have settled down after their day of manic squeaking at each other.

Don't get me wrong...they still quibble. But these days it's less of a shriek-fest and more of a squeak-fest as a rule.

I posted this in the "Boars! Simple Dominance Displays or Fighting?" thread simply because one of the posts described exactly what I'm seeing this evening...but I've realised this is a more appropriate place for it.

This is what I posted:
Outstanding post. Our boars had gone through what I thought was a bit of squabbling last week, but this evening they've really turned the dial up to 11.

They've been doing precisely what you describe above, i.e., chasing, mounting & teeth chattering. There's also been a bit of what I think is either a "keep away" or an "ooh la la" murmuring. Due to the mounting I suspect it's the former rather than the latter...or perhaps a bit of both, one form each piggie.

Bill is the older and larger pig...about 10-12 months old. Eric is the smaller pig, about 10-11 weeks old. Bill is clearly the aggressor and is chasing Eric all 'round the cage.

I've scooped Eric out and set him in his pigloo outside the cage, but Bill is tearing the cage apart as if he's looking for him.

Also, despite their cage being cleaned out only yesterday, there's a strong smell coming from the cage which I've never noticed before. We clean the cage every three days...

I've taken a video of the action and posted it below. I don't want to separate too early, and yet I don't want to really wait for blood to be drawn before I act.

It's also worth noting that when Eric dashed into a hide to get away from Bill, and I put a wadded towel in the doorway to prevent Bill following, Bill paid no attention to the fact I was there and kept trying to get past the towel to get to Eric.

This is an interesting point because we've only had the piggies for just over 2.5 weeks (three weeks on Saturday) and they're still quite timid around us. Bill couldn't have cared less how close he was getting to my hands...so long as he could get to Eric. Very unusual behaviour for our new piggies.

Update: The squabbling stopped after about 45 minutes and it's not returned today. We've also give both piggies their first bath...I've read bathing can help with squabbling.
