Hi!

I’m just looking for some advice, we’ve just rescued a 3 month old male, who we’ve named Fennec. He has been living alone and I’m trying to figure out what my best options are to get him a friend/friends.

I already have a group of 4 females, who have lost their husboar, so my ideal plan is to get Fennec neutered once he’s old enough and I know he’s healthy, then hopefully bond him with my girls. However, I have previously lost a male due to complications from neutering and part of me is absolutely terrified to go through that again. I also know that it would mean him remaining on his own for quite a while, which worries me. He would be under the care of the exotic team at Battle Flatts in Stamford Bridge, who have been amazing with my others.

I’m now wondering though whether I’m best trying to bond him with another male? I’m a little worried that he’ll then end up alone again in the future though. My other concern is that if I bond him with a male they would be in the same room as my girls, I’ve read that this could cause issues between the boys?

Also, if I choose to try bonding him to another male am I best looking for an older boar, or could I look for one a similar age to him? I know it depends on personality more than anything, but I just wondered if there’s a preference with how young he is? I am looking around for local rescues that do boar dating to know if that’s an option for him.

Sorry for all the questions, he’s just already an amazing little character and I want to try and do the best for him. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
Alice 🙂

AWWW - what a little stunner!

You may find the chapters on Companionship and Boar Dos and Don'ts in this guide here helpful.
There is no one right way. It is has to suit your own situation and the piggies involved.

As to boar companionship, if you can rescue date with an older boar then a boar pair may be a way forward if you feel too apprehensive about giving neutering another try and keeping your single boy right next to your girls with (safe) interaction through the bars during the post-op wait for better acceptance.
