My new boar, Nussi, was delivered to me just yesterday. I left him alone until today to let him familiarize himself with new surroundings; today I discovered a swollen, red lump on his hip/back area. I've already emailed the vet to ask for an appointment, and I'm fairly sure it's an old abscess that's burst (due to the scab), but I wanted to see if anyone thinks I'm way off. If it is an abscess, what can I expect the vet to do to treat it?

Your picture isn’t loading for me, perhaps you can try uploading it again.

It may be some sort of sebaceous cyst, as they are commonly found on the behind.
It’s great you’ve booked/are booking an appointment, let us know how you get on x

Tried uploading the picture here in the comment. Can you see it now?

Yes I can.
I’ll bump up your post and hopefully someone who has experience with such will be along soon x

UPDATE: as it doesn't seem like a critical emergency, and due to a lot of traffic at the vet this month, I've snatched myself an appointment in a week's time. Nussi will be alright until then :)

Congratulations on giving Nussi a lovely home - Great you’re so observant and hopefully it’ll be easily sorted 🥰

UPDATE 2: the abscess burst/started leaking earlier today. I used a q-tip with a salt+water solution (the same i use for my piercings, from the pharmacy, completely sterile) to get the puss away, and I managed to get a lot of it out. I don't believe for a second that I got it all, but I wanted to ease his discomfort until the appointment. I washed out the wound with more salt+water solution as well as pyrisept, and now he's nibbling on it every now and again, as well as washing the area more than usual. I spot-cleaned the cage (he got clean bedding two days ago) and replaced the paper bedding in one of his hideys. Is there anything else I can do to try and ward off any infections?

Just carry on doing what you’re doing with the saline. The aim is to keep the wound open just make sure it isn’t causing him too much bother and doesn’t become sore x
