Hiya, I’ve posted about this before but never got around to it as life got hectic. My boys are both about 2 and a half now and with it being a stay at home year for me because of Covid I really feel this is the time to get them both neutered as I’ll be here to constantly watch and take care of them around the clock. I’m just scared to take them because leaving my pigs at the vets and picking them back up isn’t something I’ve ever had to do! I know a lot of forum members have had successes with neutering boys as well, I’m just scared all round but know it needs to be done incase something happens and one may end up needing a wife piggie. Some reassurance would be lovely please! I’m trying to work my way up to ringing to have them done. Is their age still ok to be neutered? Thanks in advance xx

Its not nice having to leave your beloved pets a the vet for the day for surgery but its good you're planning for the future - I've had to do it several times in the past year (Patch the rabbit had to have a tumour removed and the two female bunnies had to have their spays) and it never gets any easier.
As long as they are healthy and your vet is experienced, then their age is still fine.

I called my regular vets and asked about it as they’re closer than a lot of other vet and the lady was honest and said they don’t deal with many guinea pigs and in 8 years they’ve only ever seen one guinea pig have this done, it looks like
I'm going to have to go the expensive route and go to the vet the lovely @Little Ones recommended me, I don’t drive so it’s 40 pounds each way in a taxi and just under 90 pounds per piggie but I’d rather go the proper route :) x

Hope that didn’t come off badly or anything! This year has been tight on money so most things seem a little expensive at the moment but at the end of the day I’d pay any amount of money for my piggies :) x

You are definitely doing the right thing going with a more experienced vet.
You are giving the boys the absolute best chance of a successful outcome and trouble free recovery, so well done for asking the right questions before the op.
I am sure you will all get through it just fine.

I feel a lot more at ease with the vet little ones recommended me, even the receptionist was comforting and knowledgeable when I called them, just have to plan out a day to go and the taxis and stuff, lot of arrangements to make as it isn’t really close! Thank you for your reassurance xx

Good luck with the neutering, I think it’s a good idea! Ted was nearly 5 when Bill died and we had to decided if to get him neutered. It was lockdown and boar bonding was almost impossible, the nearest being Little Wheekers at Bristol who were prepared to take him for two/three weeks. We discussed it with Simon Maddock at Ted’s dental appt and Simom didn’t see any reason why Ted shouldn’t have it done so we went ahead. Ted made a good recovery and spent most of his last year with Posh and Ginger and was very happy and quite adored by the girls, we were so glad we got it done, as you say you don’t want to face neutering at an old age and it gives them more options once neutered
