Hey everyone !
We’ve recently got our 3 1/2 year old boar neutered due to losing his brother last week ! Hoping to find him a wife !
He had his operation yesterday which went really well !
Except it’s so weird seeing his with our any tatas!
Since coming back with us he is eating and drinking fine ! Both nuggets and veg but he seems to have a slight bit of compaction from time to time which he’s never suffered before ?
Would this be because of the operation and him still being tender around there ?
Also we’ve noticed he is peeing a lot ? Even when he’s sitting on us there’s a slight dribble of pee ?

We have our vet post op check on Monday ! But wanted some advice !

Many thanks ! :)

Hi

I am very sorry for your loss.

He shouldn't be incontinent; that is not normal.

Please keep in mind that that the poos you are seeing today reflect the operation/post-op recovery and the operation cocktail since it takes about a full day for the digestive process from one end to the other and then a second day for any redigested poos, so what you are seeing is always running behind events. You always get some funny looking poos on the day after an operation but they tend to normalise as things heal off and the anal sac contracts.

All the best for a good and full recovery.

If by compaction you mean impaction then this is exactly what happened to my boar three weeks ago. He was neutered and then developed mild impaction, by this week he is only developing a very small (but very hard) impaction as it has changed as the inflammation has gone down after the surgery. He did not have any form of incontinence though.
I hope your pig recovers well.

Thanks guys for all the advice !
He’s eating well and drinking so going to keep an eye on his peeing ! Hopefully his pooping gets better too :)
We have a vet on Monday morning so can check up them :D

My sow was neutered on Monday. Her poops are just getting back to normal now. At first there were hardly any poops because the anaesthetic had slowed her gut right down... then there was a lot of tortuous, skinny poops from the first few days, and some tiny poops from when she wasn't eating much fibre. She wasn't eating or drinking much at all on her own for a while but it's a bigger op for the girls.

The poos should be getting back to normal or near normal if your boy has been eating and drinking and keeping his weight yesterday.

Please keep on weighing him daily on your kitchen scales first thing in the morning for best day to day comparison. That is the time most post-op complications develop; a sudden loss of weight/appetite gives you early warning.

Hey guys
Monty had his post op check today and the vet said he’s healing really nicely !
But he’s not eating a great deal at all ?
No hay nuggets , but a little bit of veg , but that’s it this evening :(
He’s not himself just staying in his hidey !
We mentioned the pee as keeps peeing , but that has eased now !

For some reason he’s not eating nuggets now or moving round to much
He had his op on Friday,
Should we be concerned ? We have another checkup on Friday !

Hi

Have you been weighing him daily in order to monitor his food intake and being able to step in with feeding support as soon as his weight dropped over 50g?

If not, please step in now asap. Daily morning weigh-in on your kitches scales will give you a day-to-day comparison to help you work out how much you need to feed in terms of syringe feed over the course of a day. Writing down the weight loss diary to show your vet will also help them. Sudden increasing loss of appetite/weight is often the first sign of a developing post-op complication; most commonly an abscess.
Only the scales can tell you the true extent of any loss of appetite; just simple observation is not enough since over three quarters of the daily food intake is hay - and you can never check that one by eye.

You can find all the helpful how-to tips and information in this comprehensive and very practical link here, including what to do in an emergency: All About Syringe Feeding and Medicating Guinea Pigs with Videos and Pictures

Is he on painkillers or any medication?

Hope he starts to feel better soon x

He’s on rheumocam at the moment which the vet gave us more for this week.
He weighed around 1350 and now weighing at 1270.
We are going to weigh him again in morning .
Been syringe feeding him select science pellets and water!
It weird because when we first got him back he was eating bits and bobs and nothing !

As I said, a sudden loss of appetite/weight during the recovery or while fully recovered usually points towards a developing complication. Loss of appetite immediately after an operation is generally down to the GA or pain.

Infections (an abscess is basically a walled-off infection but of course it can be something else) take typically 1-2 weeks to develop; it can be longer if only the tiniest speck of infection is around. See how he is an see your vet sooner. Check the undercarriage for any signs of lumps daily if you have suspicions.

Finger crossed for your poorly boy!
