Hi, So I'm considering having Bodhi neutered and bonding him with a pair of girls instead of finding him a same sex companion.
Is this the right decision for him?
Or would it be better to find him a boar friend?

What's the best age to neuter? Is it the same as with dogs - wait until fully grown to allow them to grow properly? I've always rescued my boys already neutered so not very clued up on guinea neutering.
Also, does anyone know the average cost of guinea pig neutering?

Thanks :) x

He's roughly 3 months old. Not sure how much he weighs, I'll weigh him tomorrow morning. x

In the U.K. you’ll find most vets will want to wait until his testicles are fully descended and he’s reached an average weight of about 900g. So he’s a while to wait, yet. But please speak to your vets to find out their policy.

Neutering a young, healthy male is certainly a good option if you have an experienced vet.
The vet really is key here to give him the best chance of recovery without complications.
It also gives you more options later on if he outlives one companion and needs to find another.

The best thing to do is speak with your vet first and see how confident they feel about the procedure.
I can't comment on the age as all boars here are routinely neutered prior to sexual maturity at 2-3 weeks of age, so they never have to be separated from family groups and there are no such things as accidental litters.

Hi!

Here is our neutering guide: Neutered / De-sexed Boars And Neutering Operations: Myths, Facts and Post-op Care

The earliest your vet will do an operation is around 4-6 months, depending on the fact that the testicles are descending, health/weight and general development. You will then have to face another 6 weeks post-op wait to make sure that there is no live sperm left in the tubes, which are not removed.
