Just thought I would share our neutering journey as a first hand experience of what you might expect / what happened with us.

Bit of background:
Boar - spud, 4 months, teddy breed. Housed next to 4 sows so he can see them through the bars but can’t get to them. (Mabel, sable, hazel and honey)
Neutering was done scrotal on Thursday 07/09/23 at approx 12pm
total cost - £77
Reason for neutering- to be housed with the sows. After research and speaking with the vet I will be waiting for 8 weeks before introducing him to the sows.

After his operation i used towels and fleece as bedding and have been changing every evening. (Picture was taken the day before his operation)

Neutering journey:

2 days before op:
Pre op checks, vet checked eyes, mouth, heart rate and that his testicles had decended (dropped) said all good to go ahead

Day of op:
Dropped off at 8:30am. I was extremely nervous and anxious.
Dropped off in carrier with hay, freezer bags with pellets and some small bits of veg.
Signed paperwork and left. Advised to pick up at 2pm
Got a phone call at 12:30 to say he was out of surgery and waking up slowly. 2 pm still fine for pick up.

Picked him up at 2pm. Very groggy and unsteady: vets said he had a small nibble on a bit of pepper and a few pellets but had not eaten much more.
Discharged with antibiotics and pain killer (antibiotics 2x daily and pain relief to start tomorrow morning 1x daily.)

Later on day of op:
Not eating, just hiding in hay, not coming out or moving around much.
Got him out to give his afternoon antibiotics.
Gave 2x syringes of critical care food- he took this really well and seemed to enjoy it.
Critical care appeared to perk him up and when I put him back into his cage he then started to flirt with the sows and started munching on his pellets and hay.
Later that day I gave some pepper, cucumber and lettuce - he ate the lettuce and small pieces of cucumber.
Still munching on hay intermittently.
Few (5/6) poos- look a very strange sort of curvey / squiggly shape with a small amount of mucus around them.

Friday - day 2/
Morning - still not a massive amount of poos over night and some with ‘’teardrop tips’, some looking more normal. Has been eating small amount over night.
Morning antibiotic’s and painkiller given, gave him a small amount of critical care again to keep him going/ and also because I had some left over. Moving around as normal now and flirting with the girls.
Afternoon - more poos now, look much more ‘normal’ in shape and texture.
Eating slightly more hay now and still munching on pellets. Few bits of pepper gone.
Evening- antibiotics given. Small amount of critical care given to keep him going. Doing well. Moving as normal, eating and have seen him drinking from his bottle. Lots of poos all look normal.
Wounds neat. No redness or swelling

Saturday-
morning antibiotics and pain killer given.
Seems totally back to normal.
Moving, eating and drinking as he normally would.
Poos all looking normal and lots of them.
Probiotics put into water to help with gut flora / just in case.
No critical care today. See how he goes without it.
Still flirting with the girls.

Evening - evening antibiotic given. No critical care needed. Seems absolutely his normal self. Moving normally and popcorning.
Lots of poos- all looking normal.
Wounds still looking good

I had a 2 year old rescue boar neutered on Wednesday, my vet as started doing the operation through the the base of the tummy with one tiny cut, the difference in recovery to their old way of 2 cuts over both testicle, was amazing. Eating and drinking, had to double check that he had been neutered.

So my boys had the 2 cuts, I must say though it’s incredibly neat and very very tiny incisions.
I was looking into getting it done abdominal for him but the nearest vets that did it that way was over 4 hours away from me and not an experienced exotic vet. Had I been able to I would have chosen abdominally but having gone through with the scrotal I’ve got to say I’m overall pretty impressed
