Hello Everyone,

I have a guinea pig who was neutered ten days ago, and he has a tiny bit of white discharge where is balls were. I will have to call the vet in the morning to try to get in, however I want to know each time there is discharge does this mean there will be abscessed? The exotic vets here are not that good compared to the ones in the UK. My guinea pig really struggled from getting back to normal after his neuter. Luckily Wiebke post about post neuter care allowed me to nurse him back to health. (Poo Soup and Critical Care) I wanted to know do Guinea Pigs get put under to get an assessed drained because I'm really unsure he would survive that again. Do you think the vet will just put him on antibiotics?

I’m sorry your piggy might have an abscess. Good luck at the vets today. I have heard about piggies only being treated with antibiotics instead of surgery for abscesses. If they are unsuitable for surgery. But it can take a long time to clear. Also Zithromax is a great antibiotic to use but it can knock out their appetite. Good luck. ❤️

Hi

Without a hands-on examination it is hard to tell. It could be rather a (harmless) fluid build-up discharging or a bit of an open infection? You are not mentioning any smell.
Anyway, your vet should be able to tell since they will see similar in post-op cats and dogs (the healing process is basically the same) and should be able to tell these things apart; even as a general vet.

An abscess is an encapsulated infection that appears as a hard lumps and then grows into quite a large (up to several centimetres), infectious fluid filled lump that eventually bursts at its weakest point. You do not mention any swelling nor do you mention the very distinctive overwhelming stink of the fluid a bursting abscess would be filled with. Once you have smelled an abscess, it is nothing something you will ever forget or mistake again!

All the best. I am very sorry that your boy has a rough ride.
