I adopted 2 boys last wheek which we will be pairing off with our ladies when they are safe in a few weeks time.
I was just wondering if i am doing the right thing by hand washing and jumper changing between visiting the boys and visiting the girls?

Their cages are in different rooms (one upstairs and one downstairs) but i think they can hear each other at meal times. I was just wondering whether smelling each other (obviously only secondary smelling not actual pig to pig!) would be beneficial to the bonding process in a few weeks or whether i should carry on as i am doing? :-\

If the boys are living together I wouldn't advise it as some boys can start fighting at the very scent of females 98)

I would keep them away from the ladies until they've done their six week safe period. Keep going from the boys to the ladies with washes in between like you are doing until then and hopefully you won't have any "boar wars" in the meantime! :D

Thanks for the advice glad to know i'm not doing all that for nothing!
I'm a little confused now though, the lady said it was 4 weeks from when they were neutered we could put them with the ladies? ?

Every vet I know says it's six weeks because it's to make extra sure any sperm has died. I believe six weeks is the standard time they give for rabbits and they use the same guidelines for guinea pigs. Four weeks should theoretically be okay and if your vet is recommending four weeks then it's probably tried and tested to be safe, but personally I'd go the entire six weeks to be on the extra safe side. ;)

Aha well we adopted them last weekend from a rabbit rescue who took them to a cavy savvy vet for their op. I think i'll go the 6 weeks though now just in case! :)

I asked about the 6 weeks thing on here a while back, and some of the more experienced people said that 2 weeks is fine. I asked my vet, and he said he didnt really know, and that is why they recommend 6 weeks. I didnt think sperm lived that long though. I suppose if they try mounting a female before they have healed properly they could do themselves some damage though.

Cool. I think i might give my vet a call on monday and if they say six weeks too i'll give it 6 weeks. :)
